Assignment instructions
Compile Notes on every chapter you read–one or two pages each chapter.
3–Do 5 Case Briefs. Just choose 5 from the book. The way to brief them is listed below. And remember
that the key word is brief, it should be about half a page each.
List of assignments, requirements and descriptions:
I)
Reading:
The textbook suggested as a primary reference source for reading assignments and
where applicable case study/analysis is Anderson’s Business Law & The Legal
Environment, by Twomey, Jennings and Fox (chapters 1-21 inclusively). The student
will also have the option to choose another textbook equivalent in content and subject
matter to the aforestated textbook.
In addition, the student is also expected to consult/search external sources of reading,
with which relate to the subject matter covered in this study. The student can locate
these sources on his/her own or based on suggestions from the mentor.
II)
Note Taking:
Notes on the text must be in written form, between 1 to 2 pages in length per individual
assignment and/or per chapters, and capture the essence of the readings and/or each
of the respective chapters assigned, (the notes may be presented in different forms, i.e.
essay, descriptive, chapters assigned, defining terms, principles and concepts,
bullets. . .).
III)
Case Briefing:
In addition to note-taking and/or review questions, student should also brief cases in
order to gain a fuller understanding of this topic. A briefing must include at least the four
areas listed below, with the fifth optional, but very valuable if the student wishes to brief
the case fully.
1)
The relevant facts, extracted from the case narrative;
2)
Identification of the issue(s);
3)
Holding(s) or ruling(s);
4)
Reasoning for the holding(s)/ruling(s);
5)
The dissenting opinion(s) and the accompanying reasoning.
OR
Review Questions:
In answering these questions, the focus must be on the issue(s) raised in the respective
questions while striving for accuracy and detail in the response(s). (Reference must be
made as to the source(s) of the derived response(s), including title of publication, text or
article, paragraph, page, author, expert source, footnotes . . .).
IV) Research Papers:
As one of the options, the student may choose to prepare and submit a research paper.
The length of the paper(s) should be 10 to 15 pages, plus bibliography if one
comprehensive paper is compiled, or 5 to 8 pages plus bibliography for the shorter, midterm papers. Footnotes are also required. The topic of the paper must relate to the
subject matter covered in this study. In addition, a 1/2 to 1 page outline detailing the
focus and thrust of the proposed research, must be submitted to the mentor for his
approval and input prior to starting work on the body of the paper. The paper can either
argue one side of an issue supported by the appropriate data, or present both sides of
the said issue highlighting the pivotal points associated therein. The evaluation will be
based on the cogency of the arguments, the reliability of the supporting data, and ability
to address the weakness and strengths of a given position.
