FOR EACH READING: Specifically, write
reflections based on:
1. Locate a quote within the assigned chapters
that has a particular impact on (+ or -) and
write it.
1. What this statement means to you and why it
made an impact.
2. Any other thoughts regarding this.
2. Identify the location (chapter and page #)
Continue with another
There is minimum of at least three quotes per
reading. Look for those that speak to you.

PART 2 OF THE FINAL: “I BELIEVE”
STATEMENT
AS AN SEPARATE PART OF THE FINAL
PLEASE WRITE AND BE READY TO READ
YOUR “I BELEVE” STATEMENT ABOUT
EDUCATION.
———————————————————-FORWARD & PRELUDE
1. “…we are only useful agents in their
education if we replace charity with
solidarity, patronizing with respect.”
(Forward, page viii)
1. I love this line! So many teachers and
aspiring teachers are going in with this
feeling of pity towards students, no matter
what socioeconomic status or race. The
paragraph goes on to say that teaches need
to see them as able-bodied people full of
potential, rather than poor kids that need to
be saved. It’s almost as if some want to
“fix” kids, and believe that they can
actually do so. This is seen through pop
culture views of urban schools specifically.
2. “There are two class of folks in the
current school debates: people who
teach…and people who talk about
teaching.” (Forward, page iv)
2. I definitely agree with this quote. It
reminds of the few large corporations and
foundations that have so much influence
over the education system that we read
about in the Barkan article about
Running Head: THEY SAID/I SAY
3
billionaires (e.g., The Gates Foundations)
and their influence on education policy and
practice. These people are not educators
and I’m sure have little experience in
education. The majority of people on the
school board, for example, are
businessmen and lawmakers with no
experience in education, and are influenced
by what they see and hear in the media. So
why is it that they have the final decision
in what schools do, and how kids learn and
how teachers teach?

CHAPTER ONE
1. “School learning is a commodity, traded
at the market like boots and
hammers…the value and use of school
learning is elusive and indirect – hence,
students are asked to accept its
unspecified value on faith.” (Chap 1, page
27)
CHAPTER ONE
1. When you ask a lot of people why they
went/go to school, most of them say,
“Because I have to.” I hear so many people
complain about how insignificant algebra
and books are to them. They don’t find the
value in learning and school. There are
those who say “go to school so you can
earn a college degree, “but what does that
even mean to students? When looking at
children in an urban setting, the concept of
attending college is always practical,
realistic, or even familiar to them, so how
2
do explain to them the importance and
value of lifelong learning and education? Is
it is means to advancing minority situation
in America, as suggested by W.E.B.
DuBois? That may be true, but being
slightly cynical, racism still exists even
now that we have an educated black male
as President. I think a primary goal for all
educators and people involved in education
is to re-evaluate why it is we have these
students going to school and its purpose –
let’s think more outside of the box and
restructure learning and school so all kids
have the opportunity to grow and succeed
in life. Maybe that has been forgotten since
all we seem to do is test and focus on
closing schools leading to privatized
education system and increasingly divided
society.
