GREEK HISTORY ON CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT.
Greece is believed to have been in existence between (1600-1900) BC. Much has
happened in Greece since ancient times to current dates and all through Greece has transformed
from bare land with physical features to a land of beauty and marvelous developments. All this
has been achieved through discoveries, innovations and even culture of a people.
The culture in Greece involved a lot of practices and activities. Rules and regulations of
life. All this formed a culture. Religion was highly adored in Greece. The Greeks worshipped
gods and goddess. They designed stone monuments and statures that represented their gods.
These structures were built in churches, streets and tombs. Sacrifices and prayer were normally
done to honors the gods. These practices formed a culture.
In every social setup, there consists men, women, children and the elderly. According to
Greek culture, men played an important role in the society. They ran the government and worked
in the fields. They also provided protection against invaders and also to their families. They also
provided for the family. They practiced hunting and food gathering to meet their manly duties.
Women spent most of the time indoors. They were not allowed to spend a lot of time
outdoor unlike the Spartan women. They were the masters in their homes. This was the major
roles they played. They controlled all the activities in the household e.g. cooking, cleaning e.t.c.
They also monitored employees and gave orders. Also, they were expected to bear as many
children as possible and take care of them. Greeks practiced agriculture. This involved crop
farming and animal keeping goat keeping for meat and milk .They planted barley, wheat, e.t.c
which served as their food sources. This was a culture they practiced.
Clothing is more than a basic need in every human. In ancient Greek, clothes were homemade and were done by wives, daughters and women slaves. During winter, men and women
wore wool and linen during summer. Every household was expected to produce its own clothes.
Decorations with jewelery were only done by the rich which is common in every social setup.
There’s always a clear distinction between the rich and the poor which was the same case. This
was part of their culture.
Civilization was the key factor that sailed Greece to its current destination. Slavery
contributed most to civilization. Slaves were freely traded where their roles were to provide
cheap labor and services. They were traded according to their appearance, age and attitude
especially men. Slaves were not allowed to have families and spent their entire lives working for
their masters. Women worked in households while men worked in fields and industries. Slave
trade was normal form and way of doing things for the Greeks which formed part of their
culture.
Dancing was a social thing where people came together to spend time together and enjoy.
Men and women were not allowed to dance together. Women were to dance with women and
same case with men. Dances varied with occasions, e.g. Funerals had their own type of dances,
weddings, celebrations e.t.c. This was the culture in Greek it was their way of doing things just
as we do them in the present world, politically, economically and socially hence being the best
definition of culture.
Logical thinking, observations, experiments formed the science in Greece. Many
scientists focused on studying the sun, moon, stars and planets. They were concerned with
knowing how far these heavenly bodies were from them. These studies were referred to as earth
science. A lot of research was also done on biology. Researchers discovered zoology which is
the study of plants and botany the study of animals. Research was done by great scientist e.g.
Aristotle, Hippocrates, and Theophrastus e.t.c. This entire great people contributed much to
science. The result of today’s modern science are as a result of their work. Discovery of metal,
wheel, screw, all contributed much to science and today’s technological advancements.
All the discoveries and innovations that were done have a great influence on our modern
world. Studies of earth science have helped in the discovering of earth metals and mineral
deposits which has boosted the world’s economy and offered jobs to the jobless. It has also
assisted in the provision of information on earth’s evolution stories and prediction of future
happenings. The three inventions that were made on drawing water namely; Archimedes’ screw,
Aqueducts and bridging, and the Siphon principle has contributed much where these principles
have been modified and simplified and are now used in the modern world.
Study of animals and plants referred to as botany and zoology has helped in the
distinction and naming of organisms and easily identifying their characteristics which has been a
great influence. It’s also argued that Aristotle has had great influence on our modern world to the
present day in that he determination and vigor to think out of the word evidence and trying to
find the cause in almost everything helped boost level of science and technology to another level.
Plato and Aristotle sought their lives to try and describe principles that would bring change and
motion. His poetry, ethics, politics, embryology e.t.c are still used in the present world which is a
positive influence.
Agriculture and animal domestication appeared around 8000 years ago in Greece which
acted as the link to technology and civilization which has had influence to the today’s world up
to date. Other contributions that have had influences on today’s world are; Metallurgy which
dealt with discovery and smelting of metal, discovery of wheel, wedge, lever, screw e.t.c. In
conclusion, Ionian, experimental and mercantile traditions practiced by the Greeks were the
closest approach towards today’s technical and scientific society of today.
