CS 1408 – Online
Final Exam
Due Before: 11:30 p.m.
Instructions: Create a program using Visual Basic 2012. It will look like the following:
This program will operate as follows:
1. The user will enter a word or sequence of characters into the top textbox and an integer into the bottom textbox.
2. When the user clicks on the “Shift” button, the program will shift the word found in the top textbox. The number of
times that this word is shifted is indicated by the integer found in the bottom textbox. Use TryParse in order to
ensure that the number of shifts is an integer. The proram should also make sure that this integer is greater than
0 before attempting to shift. This program needs to use at least 1 function or procedure in order to shift the
word. You will create this function or procedure from scratch. The event handler for the “Shift” button will call
this function or procedure. If the user clicks on the “Shift” button when the top textbox is empty, the error message
“Invalid Word” will display in a message box. If the user clicks on the “Shift” button when the bottom textbox is
empty, the error message “Invalid number of shifts” will display in a message box.
3. When the user clicks on the “Clear” button, the program will:
a. Assign an empty string to the top textbox
b. Assign an empty string to the bottom textbox
c. Assign an empty string to the label
d. Put the focus back in the top textbox
4. When the user clicks on the “Exit” button, the program will close.
This program needs to work with sequences of characters of any length and any number of shifts greater than 0.

Notes:
Points will be deducted if you don’t include the following or complete the following tasks:
1) Before you start working on this, know exactly where you saved the project to. You will want to save the
project in a folder on the desktop.
2) You must include your name at the top of the .vb file. Comment this line out.
3) Before submitting your code, make sure that it will run on other computers by copying the entire folder that
your project is found in. Paste it to another location within on your desktop and attempt to open the project
from that new location. You should be able to open that new project from within Visual Studio and run your

code from that new location. When you are done, you must turn it into the Blackboard Dropbox labeled “Final
Exam”. Do not email your solution.
4) When you are done with your program compress the ENTIRE Folder that you are working in. You must save
the compressed folder as a .zip file. You can look up how to do this on Blackboard. Whenever you turn in a
program, be sure to include all files that are necessary to run that program. Do not submit a shortcut to the
program.
The following is an example of what the contents of your zipped folder should look like:
If you try to run a compressed program it will not work. Don’t worry about this though. As long as you
submitted all of the necessary files to run your program, it will run when I decompress your code.
