NOTE: THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE CRITIQUE, BUT SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN SECTIONEXAMPLE critique:Sample Critique #1Critique of Ernest Hemingway’s “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place”Main idea: In this story, the author is saying that having a clean, well-lighted place can save a man from the loneliness of existence. In the short story, “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place,” Hemingway does an excellent job of illustrating pain of isolation and loneliness. The dialogue between the older waiter and the younger waiter does a great job of showing two men at different points in their lives. The younger waiter is tired after a long shift and doesn’t have a lot of compassion for the old man: “You should have killed yourself last week,” he said to the deaf man” (Hemingway). He doesn’t understand why the old man is lonely, and he feels frustrated that the man is keeping him from going home to his wife. The older waiter understands this impatience because he was once a young man with a wife, but he also has sympathy for the old man because he can see himself in him. Like the old man, he doesn’t have anyone at home, and this makes him lonely and sad. I also like the way Hemingway made the bar seem like heaven. It was a safe space for the old man and the older waiter: “You do not understand. This is a clean and pleasant cafe. It is well lighted. The light is very good and also, now, there are shadows of the leaves” (Hemingway). One thing that I thought was a little difficult was the dialogue. At first, I wasn’t sure who was talking, and I had to read it several times to figure it out. I’d like it more if Hemingway used “the older waiter said” after some of the lines. I also was very confused when the author started writing in Spanish: “Some lived in it and never felt it but he knew it all was nada y pues nada y naday pues nada” (Hemingway). It took me out of the story, and I couldn’t understand why he would do that. Then, after reading it a couple of times, I realized that he was saying the man was lonely and that he had nothing. Last, I did not like the end of the story. It was very abrupt, and I thought more was going to happen. It kind of left me wanting more.
