What do you think prompted Frost to select those words from Shakespeare? What is the poem about? Why does the boy die? Be careful. He does not bleed to death, and it is way too soon for infection. What do you think? Does the boy himself give us a hint in some of his last words? Some readers are disturbed by the final lines: And they, since they / Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.” How do you take the ending of the poem?Does the ending bother you or not? What does the quotation from Shakespeare bring to the poem?post1:post 1.doc post2: post 2.doc example: New Microsoft PowerPoint u5e7bu706fu7247.ppt

Frost chose the title of this poem from the play Macbeth. In the play Macbeth was
discussing the frailty of human life by starting his thought with “Out out”.
Macbeth referred to human lives as fragile as a candle’s flame. you never know
which breath will be the one to put you out. So the title “Out Out” reinforces how
fragile life truly is.
This poem is about a boy who worked on a farm that cut his hand off while using a
buzz saw. So after he cut his hand off, the boy died. There was no mourning after
the boy’s death, instead everyone on the farm continued to work
The boy dies from two main factors. The first factor was of course he was bleeding
a lot after he severed his had with the buzz saw. The second contributing factor is
the lack of knowledge of first aid in this time frame. This is shown when the doctor
was unable do anything for the boy so the doctor drugs the boy up with ether so he
won’t feel any pain.
The ending of this poem I find very fitting for a lower to mid social class for its
time frame. This poem was written in 1916. During that time if you needed
something for your survival you couldn’t just go to your local Wal-Mart. If there
was something that your family needed most of the time you had to make it from
scratch. If they were some sort of farming family the crops may have needed to be
harvested. If the family would have taken the time to properly mourn then the
whole family could have perished that next season. Instead the family continues to
work to ensure their future.
The ending of this poem does not bother me. I can relate with the family I have
seen times where mourning a fallen friend/family is not going to benefit me at that
time. I still remember those who have fallen and carry them with me to mourn at a
later date.
I think that the incorporation of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth aided this play in its sense of
tragedy. Also the use of Macbeth adds a grim foreshadowing to this poem.
The author used the passage from the Shakespeare’s play Macbeth to describe how
short life really is. Just like putting out a candle, life could be over.
This poem is about a boy who haphazardly severed his hand with a saw machine
while working in the yard. He is rushed to the doctor but alas to his death, it was
too late. Surprisingly, right after this tragedy, everybody returned to life as usual.
I believe that the boy dies of excessive anesthesia. As soon as the doctor
administers the ether to the boy, his pulse lowered then he succumbs to his death.
I think the ending is very harsh, heartless. Life goes on, just another dead boy.
However, this is an era of war, where people has gotten used of young people
dying, it was somewhat normal to many to see a boy die.
The ending still bothers me. I feel bad for this young boy who really has no
business using a saw machine, whose childhood is chattered by society with
absolutely no regards at all.
The quotation from Shakespeare reminds us how quick and easy can a life be
taken.
