culture and history of modern America for an assignment for a History of the United States class at West

purpose. Modern American history is loosely defined as the history of people living in what today is the
United States, between the years of 1877 and 2010 CE.

In your opinion, why is it important for U.S. citizens to understand the history of the United States?
Women gained the right to vote in the United States in 1920, and gained further civil rights in the 1960’s
and 1970’s through the women’s movement. Some of these rights include access to credit, birth control,
divorce and protections in the work place and in higher education. Do women today in America stand as
equal citizens, or do they need to continue to fight for their civil rights?
Each year in the U.S., national holidays are observed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas, and it is based
on the history of early English settlers in the British colonies and on the widespread belief in
Christianity. Based on what you know about Thanksgiving Day and Christmas, do you think that it is
correct to refer to the United States as a ‘Christian nation’? Why or why not?
In your K-12 education you learned about racism and segregation in the history of the United
States. Would you change the way that history is taught, or are you satisfied with the way it was taught?
If you were charged with changing any image on any of the paper currency or coinage of the United States,
what would you change? For example, if you had to change the face on the $10 bill, with which person
would you replace the image?
What is your opinion of Americans that display the Confederate battle flag? Is this history that is
