Introduction
This memo consists of three main parts, which are a brief bio of myself my academic career and
my field. Being a student in one of the top 50 schools in Untied States is a success for me, since
it was a dream to go to one of the top schools in the world. Penn State University is ranked
eighth in industrial engineering major among the all-American universities, so that made it easier
for me to choose a university.
Personal/Academic
After graduating from high school, the first two questions that come to your mind is what major I
am going to study and in which university. However, I came from a business family that own
electronics stores and factory. They have always wanted me to learn how our business is going
and how important to learn that in early age. I used to go to the factory every day after school
since I was 12 years old until I graduated from high school. That made me to love factories and
how things are made in specific process and system. Thus, I decided to study something that I
like and at the same time something that going to help me to improve my family business. After
searching, I found out that industrial engineering is the best choice. Industrial engineers tries to
figure out ways to do things better and they engineer process and system that improve quality
and productivity. They work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, energy, and other
commodities, which what I want to study. Then, I made my decision to come to Penn state after I
searched and asked people. Penn State was at the top of the list because Industrial and
Manufacturing Engineering was established at 1908 in Penn State University as the first
industrial engineering department in the world, and it ranked 8th in the US in 2015.
During the first two years at Penn State, I took basic science and engineering courses are taken,
which are required for all engineering students. Then, I started taking IE courses that are
required. These courses are designed to introduce the students to basic industrial engineering
fields of interest, which include human factors/ergonomics, manufacturing, operations research,
and service engineering. I think most of the courses that I took are important to my field. IE 327
is one of these and I really liked, it’s about human factors in the workplace. This course contains
Human information processing, basic auditory and visual displays, basic human-computer
information, anthropometry and musculoskeletal principles, cumulative trauma disorders, low
back problems, NIOSH lifting guidelines, work measurement, and work environment. A course
like IE 327 is important to my field since I will be working in a factory that contains more than
100 employee, and I will be managing these employees.
Industrial engineers at Penn State do many projects in the major classes, at least two each
semester. I have done a project with a team that consisted of four members; we did that in IE 302
and there was some prizes. The project was about making improvements to Lowe’s recycling
program. We did so much research and calculations for about 6 weeks; also, we met two
industrial engineers at Lowe’s company. We came up with some improvements that can save
Lowe’s company if they implement it more than $650, 00.00 a year. Thus, a project like that for
sure taught me many things that can help me in the future because we felt that we are an
employee not students.
However, knowing your academic strength and weaknesses is very important to your success in
the academic life. Some of my academic strengths are focus, discipline, good with math and
critical thinking problems, but I always like to improve my skills and learn good new skills. By
knowing that I have these skills and try to make advantage of it I usually get good grades and
GPA. While I have some academic weakness like over study for some exams, which I think is
not good because it’s wast of time and energy that I could use it in something else. I will try to
get rid of it by at least study one week before the exam so I can take my time studying without
any stress.
Discourse Community
I want to get experience in the manufacturing field, which is one of the Industrial engineering
areas, after I graduate. One of my friends got an internship in summer 2015 at a petroleum
company. I interviewed him to know more about what the industrial engineer do in the job. An
average day for an Industrial engineer has a balanced engineering work done behind the
computer, where they study a specific problem and go to manufacturing floor to go to the actual
spot to determine the actual problem. The majority of the information that needed to solve the
problem are usually not available, so they set up methodologies to collect the data. Sometimes it
involves creating project teams in specific areas. Industrial engineers usually communicate in
personal, which is a good thing because you they make sure that everyone knows their job or
what they asked to do. Industrial engineers always have to write reports in to their manager and
some of employees for every problem. Explaining the problem and what are the solutions and
methodologies. In addition, they write mini reports every day to keep the manager up dated.
