on Bb prior to class In-class Discussions part of participation
grade
Bring to class three in-depth discussion topics or series of questions
1. Provide text and page number from book.
2. Provide your reflections that show you have thought about the material.
One discussion topic or series of questions should draw a connection between
a civil rights issue of today.
3. Provide a brief summary of the civil rights issue.
4. Provide your in-depth questions connected to the civil rights issue.
From Sept. 14 to Oct. 22: Topics should draw on material from previous chapters.
Here’s a sample of ONE discussion topic from ‘Panther Baby’ and a connection to
a civil rights incident today:
On page 12, Jamal discusses how blacks in the South were being “fire-housed,
clubbed, and bitten by German Shepherds.” But in the North white storekeepers
would “kick out blacks, white teens would jump us, and white cops would beat the
shit out of us for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
What is the nature of this hatred of blacks by whites? Where did it originate?
Why did it continue? What is at the very core of this hatred and brutality?
And it seems that in some cases, the same behavior is happening to people of
color often today often at the hands of police. For example, take the case of
Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Md on April 12 of this year. Gray ran after seeing
police at an intersection. Police pursued him. He didn’t resist arrest. Upon being
apprehended at 8.42 am, Gray asked for an inhaler. He didn’t receive one. He
was put into the back of a police van without seat belts. By the time the police
van arrived at the station, at 9.26 am, he was unconscious and in serious
medical distress from a severed spine. He died a week later.
What is at the nature of such a disregard for human life—especially black
human lives? Why hasn’t society improved in the nearly 50 years that this
incident took place? What has stopped societal progress in this area? What
structures are in place that prevent change?
