Ecological Theory- Life Model
The perspective of ” person in environment ” has been used in the social work field for
many years. Ecological theory focuses on the fit between people and their environment.
The goodness of fit changes over time and problems are thought to arise when there is no
longer a good match between people and their environment (Kelly, 1968). The life model is
a hybrid of ecological theory and suggests that human problems “fall into three interrelated
areas: 1) life transitions involving developmental changes, status role changes, crisis
events; 2) the unresponsiveness of social and physical environments; and 3)
communication and relationship difficulties in families and other primary groups” (Germain &
Gitterman, 1980 P. 13) . The ecological-life model model perspective divides the
environment into systems of increasing complexity. Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (1997) have
identified four levels of systems: the micro system, consisting of the family; the meso
system, ;consisting of extended family, friends, colleagues at churches or temples, schools,
and work: the ecosystem, consisting of local government; and the macro system, consisting
of social institutions and processes.
