Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was a famous American abolitionist, author and public speaker. He was an
abolition leader who wanted to end all slavery. Frederick Douglass’s viewpoint was that all
slaves should have freedom.
When it comes to Frederick Douglass viewpoint on slavery, he did not assume the Constitution
was a pro-slavery document. Additionally, Frederick did not advocate the dissolution of the
Union, because that would isolate slaves in the South.
The evidence that Fredrick Douglass used was from research that was done on the document.
The Constitution pro-slavery document stated that “a citizenship was defined by the
Constitution and was extended to all people born within the United States.” The Constitution
did not completely recognize “property in humans.”
Captain Canot
Captain Theodore Canot, whose real name was Theophile Conneau, was a French-Italian
adventurer and slave trader. He was 22 years old when he set sail to the Americas. Captain
Theodore Canot served operations as clerk, agent, supercargo, and ship owner.
Captain Canot viewpoint is that he wanted and supported slavery. Canot’s story is filled with the
lurid details and violent personalities of the new era of slave trading after the Napoleonic Wars,
stimulated by Europe’s revived demand for tropical produce, the expansion of slave systems in
Brazil, Cuba, and the United States, and the enormous profits to be gained in the face of Britain’s
efforts to blockade the seas.
