Impacts of psychological distress on university students wellbeing
Self-satisfaction, life satisfaction, and mental rest are some determines to one’s
wellbeing. Education is very essential nowadays to gain knowledge and live an appropriate and
satisfied life which can be important for reaching wellbeing. Through all the years of education,
having to pass college is considered the toughest years through them all, due to a lot of reasons.
College can be hard cause it is so different than school, where students needs to go through a lot
of pressure which causes psychological distress and disturb their daily routine, and that can
affect their wellbeing negatively. The high prevalence of mental health problems in university
students provides evidence for this being an at-risk population. Implications: The results
highlight the need for universal early interventions to prevent the development of severe mental
illness in university students.
Psychological distress worsens the students’ grades. When students are stressed and
preoccupied by unnecessary, it interfere with their ability to focus during lectures or private
studying. Stress may even cause students to drop out of school or drop classes. When students
miss classes and lectures they end up performing very poor. Students who are stressed do not
participate in group discussions together with their classmates. Most of the time they not submit
their assignment on time that is required. Educators need to recognize the great impact stress has
on students and young adults, and work to create a conducive educational environment. School
administration should conduct regular check-ins with students and direct students to counselors
and mental health programs when necessary and educate to educate the students on negative
impact of stress on them.
College students have to be more independent through their learning process in contrast to
school students, where their learning process depends on teachers mostly. Most the students
depend on teachers to offer adequate learning materials. In the university the lectures offers very
little and the student need to work a lot on himself. At the end of the course the student must
achieve the graded needed by the lecture, lead to great stress to the students preparing to do
exams. During the exams time, most the students are affected since they are usually not well
prepared (DeGrauw & Norcross, 2013). Through all the years of education, having to pass
college is considered the toughest years through them all, due to a lot of reasons. College can be
hard cause it is so different than school, where students needs to go through a lot of pressure
which causes psychological distress and disturb their daily routine, and that can affect their
wellbeing negatively. Most of the students become ill and others develop psychological problem.
Some college students might go more independent and live on their own, which can increase the
amount of stress and pressure they go through due to daily life tasks.
Poor relationship among the students causes stress to them. Most of students engage themselves
to poor relationship leading to hatred toward each other. Bad company in school lead to
psychological problem hence the student cannot settle in class (STALLMAN, 2010). At night,
most students do not sleep well decreasing sleep quality impacting concentration, learning,
listening, memory and problem-solving.
Wellbeing is the state where people are happy and satisfied with their life and successful.
Reaching wellbeing can have a lot of ways, either through positive effects, reaching one’s goal
or simply feeling happy. Deci and Ryan (2008) stated that wellbeing is mostly concerned to be
subjective, because it is about how generally people evaluate themselves and the degree of
wellness they experience. There are a lot of factors that can impact wellbeing according to each
person’s personality, psychology, and their way of thinking and living.
Many studies have shown financial worries and debt to induce stress in students, this together
with the existing challenges raises the question of how student debt affects students’
and’ stress levels. The students who come from poor background always face a lot financial
challenges. Most of the end up in borrowing school mate (Jadav, 2011). The students are not able
to pay back resulting to poor relationship with other students. Debt leads the student not to
concentrate in the class hence poor performance.
Students these days experience a lot of difficulties through their academic years in order to
gain the inquired knowledge they need, so they can have the job they want, live a satisfied life,
and be successful. Pressure, depression, stress, and anxiety are some of the influencers causing
students’ psychological distress, affecting their mental health in turn. Horwitz (2007) described
psychological distress as an emotional response to stress, which can cause depression if not
treated. Thus, it means it can also affect their personal life as well rather than just their school
life which was started by Wheaton (2007) where he argued that day-to-day living and social
functioning can be relatively affected by psychological distress. This means that untreated
psychological distress is a major problem for students since it can affect different aspect in their
life. However, it may be over looked by the students themselves or their surroundings or taken
lightly (Dixon & Kurpius, 2008). Thus, they may suffer from academic or daily life problems
without knowing the real cause of it which may be the psychological distress they are going
through.
Many students suffer from continuance stress though most of their academic years. Some
of these stressors are their fear of losing marks which can impact on their GBA, financial
problems, or their inability to balance between academic life and their personal life.
Psychological distress can affect the academic performance of the students negatively, and
according to Ridner (2004) psychological distress occurs in response to stress and is associated
with an inability to cope effectively. However, psychological distress can have negative impacts
on the students’ health, just like how Kumar (2016) argued that stress causes other adverse
effects like depression and anxiety affecting the entire health of the student.
Wellbeing can be a detector to students’ mental health, and it can be easily affected by a
lot of different factors since it is determined by the positive and the negative effects on each
individual. Since wellbeing is affected by the psychological state of people’s mental health
problems, psychological distress can easily impact on their wellbeing (Westman, 2011).
Psychological distress is a mental health problem that can be caused by stress, pressure, and a lot
of other factors. Introduction of Medicare items for psychological treatment facilitates access to
clinical psychologists and other mental health professionals. Stress can be considered as the most
mental problem which can cause psychological distress, while it is also caused by the difficulties
and pressure that students have to go through while completing their education. Students must
try to avoid any stressors that can have a negative impact on their psychological health, which in
turn can affect their life negatively. Lectures should help the student when such problem occurs
to their student in their universities.
Distress leads to poor relationship with the family members. When the students do not
perform well in the university, parents become angry with them destroying the cordial
relationship. Parent can end up not paying the school fees to the student. Later live of the student
is interfered with and the student may end up giving up in life. Most of the student who have
committed suicide in school are as result of stress and mostly when they not want the parent to
know. Individual students experience mental problem when the parents do not provide all that is
needed to up keep them. Some students have killed their family members due to
misunderstanding when they are stressed. Stress can be considered as the most mental problem
which can cause distress, while it is also caused by the difficulties and pressure that students
have to go through while completing their education. Parents need to understand their children
and always take them to psychological counselors.
