Sleepy Lagoon Murder Case -Zoot Suit Riots.
On August 1, 1942 the Sleepy Lagoon became part of Los Angeles history when the murder of
a young man on the Williams ranch resulted in a violent clampdown by the police against
Mexican American young people. Within months of the convictions, Los Angeles erupted in the
Zoot Suit Riots.
The Sleepy Lagoon Murder case and the Zoot Suit Riots were actually not related other than the
temperament at the time regarding “Pachuco’s” and the “Zoot Suits”

You can also single out any case on the Innocence Project for review. There are far too many

evidence, as well as other reasons, including faulty testimony and frankly faulty investigations.

Emmett Till and Black History
Many cases have marked their significance in history, especially in black history.
But this case, the brutal beating that eventually lead to the murder of Emmett Till, is an
example of many of the South’s extreme cases of racism and lynching against blacks.
The severity of the events that transpired, from the murder to the conviction, impacted the
lives of both, whites and blacks all across America.
Emmett Till was born to Louis and Mamie Till on January 25, 1941 in Chicago,
Illinois (“Till” 1). Till’s parents separated soon after Till was born; Till’s father enlisted
in the U.S. Army and his mother worked as a clerk for the U.S. Air Force. Mamie later
received news from the Armed Forces that Louis was killed in Italy, she continued to
raise Emmett as a single mother. Since his mother worked long hours and was often tired,
Emmett volunteered to take on the household chores to aid his mother while she worked.
As his mother recalls, “He told me if I would work, and make the money, he would take
care of everything else.” (“Biography” 1). Emmett was nothing more than a child striving
to be “normal” and render his help to others, blacks and whites, despite the discrimination
against African Americans.
Segregation did exist in Chicago where Till resided with his mother, but it never
amounted to the Jim Crow laws, discrimination and lynching of African Americans going
on in the South. In August 1955, one of Till’s great uncle, who lived in Mississippi,
visited Till and his mother. Till soon learned that his uncle would be returning to
Mississippi and taking one of Till’s cousin with him; it was then that Till begged his
1
mother to let him go on the journey. Since Mamie knew that Till had a sense of humor,
she warned Till that he should behave while he stayed over for the summer with his great
uncle. Before she sent him on his journey, Mamie handed Till a ring that had the initials
L.T., which belonged to his estranged father (“History” 1).
Soon after arriving in Money, Mississippi, Till and his cousins, after a long day
picking cotton in the hot sun, the boys begged their uncle to let them go to a nearby town
to purchase refreshments. The boys arrived at “Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market,”
joked around and as his cousin Simeon Wright recalls, “Till whistled at the store owner’s
wife, Carolyn Bryant,” (“America Tonight” 1) a white woman. In Mississippi, it was a
big deal to even look at a white woman, let alone, whistle at her. The boys soon left the
store and went about their business not knowing that their actions would later transpire
and lead to the murder of young Emmett Till.
Three days after Till had whistled at Bryant, two men, apparently Bryant’s husband
and brother J.W. Milam, showed up to Wright’s home and demanded that they hand over
Till. Wright recalls that “two white men stood at the edge of his bed and pointed a gun at
him” (“America Tonight” 1) stating that Till dress himself and come with them. Wright’s
mother offered money to the two men in exchange for Till, but the men insisted that Till
needed to come with them. As Wright recalls, “the men said they would bring him back,
but I knew after the sun came up, I knew then that they wasn’t going to bring him back.”
(“America Tonight” 1).
Till’s uncle reported the kidnapping to the police, Bryant and Milam were both
arrested and charged with the kidnapping of Emmett Till and pending charged for his
disappearance. Three days after Bryant and Milam were arrested, “the decomposed body
2
of Emmett Till was recovered from the Tallahatchie River along with a fan and barbed
wired tied around his body.” (“American Experience 1).
Both Bryant and Milam soon faced trial for the murder of Emmett Till. Because
women and blacks were banned from serving as part of a jury, both men were acquitted
of all charges despite the amount of evidence against them. The jury that acquitted them
was made up of all-males and they were all white. Soon after their acquittal, both men
later confessed to the brutal murder to a magazine in exchange for money. Due to double
jeopardy laws already in place, the two men were never tried again.
After the trial, Mamie returns to Illinois and receives the casket that contains her
sons body. She orders that her sons casket be left open because she wanted to “let the
world see what has happened, because there is no way I could describe this. And I needed
somebody to help me tell what it was like.” (“History” 1). Thousands of people showed
up to see the body of Emmett Till and like his mom, they too were shocked to see how
badly Bryant and Milam had beaten Till.
In 2005, fifty years after the death of Emmett Till, his body was exhumed in the
attempt to convict any co-conspirators involved in the case and to confirm that the body
buried in the casket was indeed that of Emmett Till. DNA did prove that the body that
was in the casket was that of Emmett Till and, unfortunately, due to the statue of
limitations, if there were any co-conspirators, none could be brought to justice.

Case Analysis Guidelines
Mr. Michelson
GENERAL INFORMATION
You can choose just about any criminal case you’d like. I have links to many cases throughout
Blackboard so you can see if any are of interest to you. There are many included here.
There are two parts to the case analysis; an outline followed by the final submission.
WRITING AN OUTLINE
Prior to starting your project please submit a one-page outline to the instructor. See reference tab
for examples of outlines and cases. A minimum one (1) page outline is required. For my purposes,
abbreviated versions format using Roman Numerals are ok. In formal papers, full sentence outlines are often
accompanied with an APA reference list on a separate page. Quotes within the outline must also utilize APA
in-text citations.) Include the following questions
•
•
•
•
•
Read and research a criminal case to write your paper. The paper is essentially an
overview of the case. Some points to consider:
Why did you want to do this case?
What is the main “issue” about the case; police response, investigation, forensics, legal
issues, appeals, false confessions, false evidence, prosecutorial misconduct, exculpatory
evidence being withheld, whether the case impacted police investigative techniques.
Other issues may include police response, poor investigation, faulty investigative
procedures, forensics, Prosecutorial misconduct, Exculpatory evidence being withheld,
etc.
If you’re including trial and appeals, then that can be a bulleted item.
CASE ANALYSIS: The term paper is a case analysis. (Not a Case Brief)
This is similar to an assignment in an English class where you are asked to read a book and make a
summary of the book. A case analysis is a condensation of the important elements of a criminal
case. However, there are examples of both outlines and cases that may help you. You can select
virtually any criminal case you’d like or I can assign you one if you wish. There will be sample
papers available and the “Recommended Reading” may give you some ideas for your case.
.
Specifics on Case Analysis:
1. The paper should be computer generated, double-spaced, with correct grammar,
punctuation and spelling.
2. The Term Paper will be submitted via Safe Assign in Blackboard.
3. It must be a minimum of 5-7 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman Font, Size 12.
4. Minimum word count: 1200 without title/heading/references
5. In-Text citations are to be used and be properly formatted, using the APA format.
6. References or resources must be cited properly
Rev. October 2017
1
7. Points may be deducted for failure to follow the designated format and instructions. This
can include improper formatting, lack of a cover page, not using “In-text” citations, not
using a reference page or not using it correctly.
8. Spelling and grammar must be at college level writing levels. Poorly written papers with
grammatical and spelling errors may result in a lower grade. Students should make every
effort to “edit” their paper and run a “Spellcheck” prior to submission.
9. Note that Safe Assign does highlight suspected “cut and paste” efforts by comparing
prior papers from a large database)
Citations and References.
You must include a reference page with the following – at least:
1. One (1) citation from your text,
2. Two (2) from another book, journal or professional article,
3. Two (2) from the internet. (Web articles)
4. Wikipedia or similar generic sites are not “research” and should not be cited as original
sources.
5. That’s five (5) REQUIRED citations. They must be cited correctly and we use the APA
format, not MLA format. APA is the American Psychological Association. MLA is the
Modern Language Association. Social sciences use APA, which is why we’re using them.
Want to read that again?
6. Please submit files only as: DOC, DOCX, RTF or TXT not WPS, Mac or Works files.
7. All papers are submitted through “safe-assign” which is a program to identify source
materials found on the internet, including papers from other students or other
references. A “high” percentage reading may be interpreted to mean that the paper
submitted has a high potential for using plagiarized content. This can result in either a
failed score for that assignment or a reduced score.

1. Use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.
2. Give an initial overview of the case – similar to an abstract first. This is like a synopsis of
the evidence and resulting decisions.
3. The body of the case
4. A conclusion
5. Lastly, include what you thought about the case.
6. Please review your paper before submitting. You can lose points for poor structure,
grammar or spelling.
7. ALL papers are submitted through SAFEASSIGN which will highlight plagiarism. This
is a serious issue and may result in an “F” for the assignment.
8. Use the in-text citation format and references section correctly
HOW TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS VIA BLACKBOARD
There are three different ways to submit your assignment. Once you click on the writing
assignment, you will see a “SUBMIT” box to click into:
1. You can simply write your response in the box provided in that specific tab.
2. You may copy and paste your answer in the box.
3. Or, submit your assignment by clicking “choose file” or “browse” under 2,
“Assignment Materials.” (PREFERRED)
“Save” your assignment if you are not ready to submit it. Once you “submit” your assignment
you can’t edit it anymore.
Make sure your document is saved under the following formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .txt. If not,
then I will not be able to grade it.
ALWAYS save your work in your own computer in case a Blackboard error occurs.
DO NOT EMAIL ME YOUR ASSIGNMENTS…I receive hundreds of emails between the class
emails and my GCCCD email account. You don’t want an important assignment to get lost in the
shuffle!
