When referencing adolescent choices and rights regarding when is appropriate to make the decision to use contraception, I think when sexual activity is inevitable. Considering technology is in our pockets, there are applications that make connecting with peers easy and convenient (Crooks 2017 pg. 381). Schools provide an environment to educate youth about the consequences of unprotected sexual conquests, but also serve as a facilitator. The beginning of puberty and peer influences mean the topic of sex will arise, so just make the information available to teens. Each case will be unique, and guardians may not be willing to introduce the information early enough, meaning the information will likely come from peers (Crooks 2017 pg. 381-382). So, if asked what age should be the ideal age for an adolescent to decide regarding contraception, I think that early teen years would be ideal. If technology is already so easily accessible and media is filled with sexual innuendo, how do we prevent exposure until an “ideal age”? It seems an impossible task and for resource and time needed to attempt to avoid exposure, sexual intercourse is a part of life. Educating and preparing young people for the emotional, physical, and psychological influences of sex is the best course of action.Claudene:The age for responsible consideration for sex amid teenagers is a difficult decision. The decision is difficult in terms of teenagers mature at different levels. The responsible answer would then be at the age of sexual maturity. The greater question would be, how does a teenager knows when they are becoming sexually mature? Males are more in tune with their bodies at an earlier age then girls due to the fact they have touched their genitals more. However the female growth is much faster once puberty develops. Due to media attention combine with technology adolescents are more advance today than they were years prior. The initial sex experience might be approximately the same age as in years past, however, today kids have more access to things of a sexual nature than before. We now must put a definition to sex since we have become more advanced with defining it. People can have oral and manual stimulation however unless they have penile –vaginal sex they have not had sexual intercourse. “Many teenagers consider oral sex to be more acceptable in dating situations and significantly less risky than coitus in reference to health, social, and emotional consequences” (Brady & Halpern-Felsher, 2007; Knox et al., 2008). This presents a problem within itself. Regrettably a person can catch a STI by having oral sex.Inconclusion the answer to this question would still be at the age of sexual maturity. Unfortunately any type of sexual contact can be risky when shared with a partner. One would hope the teenagers has the assistance of a responsible adult. However, once the teenager becomes interested in sex they must first do the research and make responsible decisions when it comes to contraception not only against pregnancy but also against any STI.
