English Literature Class Discussion
My Initial Post
A time when I was actively moved to tears was after reading the poem “One Hundred Love
Sonnets: XVII” by Pablo Neruda. While this poem may not commonly draw a person to tears
because it is about love and a description of love, it created a feeling of realization for me. I was
in a new relationship at the time, and after reading the poem, I realized that the way the poet
describes the love for one person was so unique and so real that I cried knowing that there was a
possibility for someone else to feel that about me. Literature is a significant part of human
culture for many reasons, one being that it allows for people to open their minds and even their
hearts when reading. By having an open mind, it will enable people to take the positive and
beautiful things that they understand and apply it to real life. By integrating some of the things,
literature teaches people into society. It creates a better place to live, filled with emotions, good
thoughts, and feelings.

Nice post Khem! (: I bet you will enjoy our poetry unit in a few weeks.
2. Colleague Initial Post
Growing up I read a lot of fiction, romances and science-fiction were my favorite but one day
while visiting a friend I noticed a small book on her countertop and asked to borrow it. That
book was called, PUSH by Sapphire, it was the first book that ever made me cry. The book was
made into a movie a few years ago called precious but I don’t think it did a great job of
conveying the level of pain and despair that the main character went through. The book discusses
the disastrous effect that parental abuse can have on a child. She is initially presented as being a
bully who has major anger issues but the reader soon discovers she is truly a victim. I think the
book shows that feeling powerless in an abusive situation is not uncommon but being able to rise
above the circumstances, no matter how terrible, will be worth the fight. PUSH stands for Pray
Until Something Happens and it really helped me to understand that you may never truly
understand what someone may be going through on a daily basis so be patient and be kind.
3. Colleague Initial Post
A couple years ago I read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbran faster than I have ever read any book in
my life. I was mesmerized and could not set the book down. I would stay up late and wake up
early before work just to get a couple pages read. The book brought me to tears, it made me
angry and I learned a lot about that particular time in the world and world war II. When I was
reading the book, I felt like I was there, feeling the pain and seeing the horrible things they did.
“Literature can take readers where they have never been before, in so doing, can create a sense of
adventure and wonder” (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). My sense of wonder and adventure was
evident in my being transfixed with this book. I was interested in how a person’s mind and faith
can kill or keep a man alive. Mental stability is crucial and keeping a clear mind and faith in
something, in anything will make or break you in a life-threatening situation.
Critical Reasoning Class Discussion
My Initial Post
Academic content may be challenging to analyze, but it is essential to do so in learning. When
analyzing content first, I look for information in books or journals which are relevant to the topic
I am studying or related to the field of the question. Once I find something which fits the subject
I determine if it comes from a credible source. It is essential to analyze the author’s, how recent
the article is, what is the author’s purpose and what sources are being cited (Weida & Stoley,
2013). In regards to the quote from Appendix A, the authors are referring to critical thinking
“moves” which academic critical thinkers make. They take skills such as analyzing the
information, asking what the issue is, what the concept is and what the information means and
applying it to the subject. For example, taking an article about the history and being able to
analyze it without knowing a lot about history critically and yet apply it to historical reasoning
by using the critical thinking “moves.”

1. Colleague’s Response
Hey Khem,
How would you say that you analyze the content to fit into your own career? The book talked
about how if academics content is related to something you like doing there is a higher chance of
retention. I find that to be true with myself!
2. Colleague’s Response
Khem, thank you for your post! I agree that research is very important, and I believe research
should be made before attempting anything of importance. Having done the research will allow
for a more educated work through of whatever problem may occur, assiting existing strategic
thinking skills.
3. Colleague’s Response
Khem,
I agree the resources should be credible. That made me think of the commercial where the
women says it has to be tre because she got her information from the internet. But we know as
students that not every source tells the whole truth so it is important to see the date and the
authors past and present skills. Thank you for bringing up this very important point!
4. Colleague’s Response
Analyzing anything can be challenging without a guide, you listed many ways to analyze in
order to complete research. It is so important to start with a topic of interest when you have a
choice in what you are analyzing, because it will allow you to flow more freely and become
more connected to the process and the topic itself. Wouldn’t you say that if you have an outline
to use as your guide, then it would be less difficult to decipher what content is relevant or not?
School is currently my career and I analyze content regularly and use outlines for clarity and
balance. From the (Paul & Elder), 2012 chart, “thinking” is the process to formulate the outline
for research, “feeling” is the part of knowing what is acceptable for your work, and “wanting” is
the hurdle you get over in order to write from the research that applies to your topic.

5. Teacher’s Comment
Khem,
Supporting our ideas with credible sources is so important in the critical thinking process. Your
post highlights very important steps for assessing credibility of our references.
I usually refer to critical thinking tools – but I like how you call them critical thinking ‘moves’. 🙂
