Expert answer:Instructions attached- Conditions Necessary for Seed Germination and GrowthSeed germination requires various conditions whose absence can lead to the failure of the seeds to germinate. Research shows that conditions like the presence of moisture, oxygen, and source of light are very critical for any successful germination and growth of any seed. This proposal is aimed at putting down how effectively an experiment can be done to either approve or disapprove the general knowledge about seed germination.Aim of the experimentsThe experiment will be set to answer the following questions1. Is it possible for a seed to grow in the absence of moisture Experiment hypothesisSeeds cannot germinate in the absence of moisture. The seeds that are planted in very dry soil where all the moisture has been removed through soil roasting will not germinate. The other seed that will be planted on moisture soil will germinate (the control experiment). When a seed is placed in a place void of oxygen, it will not grow. Paraffin block the circulation of oxygen to the seed planted in water but coated with paraffin. Failure of the seed germination will be as a result of poor oxygen circulation. On the other hand, the control experiment with a seed just dipped in water without paraffin will show a positive result. The seed will actually germinate. After seed germination, the sidling need sunlight to grow effectively. In the experiment with the seed placed near an open window to allow in some sunlight, the seedling will be seen bending towards the window in order to receive sunlight. However, in the control experiment with the seed placed outside where it can directly attain sunlight, the seed will be seen growing very upright.Protocol for conducting this experimentExperiment one- to check effect of moisture to seed germination* In one petri dish, (the control experiment), place some amount of soil. Then place the Sunflower seed, Pinto bean seeds, and French marigold seeds in the same ratio and add some water. Check the outcome after three to six days.* In another petri dish, place a similar amount of roasted soil. Place the Sunflower seeds, Pinto bean seeds, and French marigold seeds in the same ratio on the soil. Check the outcome after three to six days.

DATA COLLECTION
•
•
You will need 4 photos of different time points during your experiment
o One needs to be of your set up and one needs to be of the last day of your
experiment. The other 2 are up to you.
You will need to do your experiment in triplicate
o This means you need three sets of data for each seed/ variable you are measuring

Reports are DUE Nov 20th, 2017 by 4 pm.
Reports should be turned into my mailbox in the Biology office- 3rd floor, Smith
Reports should be written in 12 point font, times new roman with 1 inch margins for all
sides and double spaced. The page maximum for this assignment is 4 pages.
No title page is necessary, but ensure that your name is on both pages in the header
Introduction

This section is where you talk about background for your topic
o For example, this can include what plants need to grow, ideal growing conditions
for the seeds you chose, etc
All background information must be cited in APA format. Failure to cite your
sources will result in an automatic zero.
After you discuss already known knowledge state your research question and hypothesis
Methods
•
Write in detail what you did to carry out your experiment. This would be a good place to
include your set up photo.
Results

•
•
•
Write in sentences what your results were.
Ex) The sunflower seeds grew an average of 10 inches when exposed to orange juice
over a 2 week period. In comparison, the sunflower seeds grew an average of 22 inches in
the presence of water.
Include a data table and chart (bar, pie, line, etc) make sure you choose the correct one
You can include the other photos in this section to back up your results
Discussion

Do your results support your hypothesis?
Why do you think your outcome occurred the way it did?
Describe anything that could have affected your results. What does this study tell you
about your plants and what they need to grow?
