❖Tidal Volume (TV)
-Start at 1000 mL. Inhale and exhale normally into spirometer
(with no extra effort). Record measurements.
-Do this 3x and take the average
❖Expiratory reserve volume (ERV)
-Start at 1000 mL. Inhale and exhale normally, then force as
much air as possible out through spirometer. Record
-Do this 3x and take the average
❖ Vital Capacity (VC)
-Start at 1000 mL. Inhale as much as possible and exhale as
much as possible into spirometer.
-Do this 3x and take the average
Methods – Record data in your data tables
❖Calculate inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) and inspiratory
capacity (IC) from other data.
❖IRV = VC – (TV+ERV); or VC – TV – ERV
❖IC = IRV + TV; or VC – ERV

in the lab handout with the inspiratory capacity
(IC). (8 points)
 Instead of forming a hypothesis this time: Calculate your
expected vital capacity based on age and sex using one of the
online calculators found the final slide. (2 points) (Be sure to
cite the one you use.)

Compare your measured vital capacity to your expected vital capacity
from the link provided.
Are the measured and calculated VC values the same? What factors may lower
measured vital capacity (e.g., smoking)? How might one increase one’s vital capacity?

What are some ways that the various lung diseases we talked about
would affect lung volumes and capacities? You do not need to talk
about every disease, instead talk about a couple of diseases and
explain why they result in abnormal lung capacities. Use proper
terminology for full credit (4 points)
