There are three dominant parties in Sweden, the Social Democratic Party (Center-Left),
the Moderate Party, and the Sweden Party. The Social Democrats, which holds 113 of the 349
seats of the Swedish Riksdag, are a center-left party who focus on the welfare state that does
with government funding of healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc., in order to keep the
necessities of their citizens. The Moderate Party, which holds 84 seats, is a centrist party that is
in agreement with some of the government funding, such as healthcare but not so much
education, and leans more right on social issues like immigration. The Sweden Democrats,
which holds 29 seats, are a fast rising, far right-wing party (ipfs). They focus on issues like
being tough on immigration, “keeping Sweden, Swedish”, and support Brexit. They want their
own version called “Swexit” (Gutteridge). According to projections in the 2018 election, the
Sweden Party will overtake the Moderate Party as the second biggest party, but these three
standout above the rest.
Sweden’s economy is currently doing well right now. The OECD (Organization for
Economic Co-operation and Development) praises Sweden for its downward trending
unemployment and higher rising standard of living. “The high share of people with a good job,
combined with its strong system of social protection, makes Sweden a model of inclusive
growth,” (OECD). However, Sweden does face some economic problems. Sweden must
address housing market reform, increased inequality, and low-skilled immigration workers
unable to translate to working professions. Immigration is viewed as the most important issues
to the Swedish people at 53%, while education is second at 29% (Sveriges). However, Swedish
people seem to favor the EU with 84% supporting the economic situation in their country, 65%
with a favorable view of the EU, and only 22% support leaving the EU. However, 53% support

voting on “Swexit” and 78% disagree with the way the EU is handling immigration. Religion is
not a big part of issues or politics in Sweden. 62% of Swedes are members of the Church of
Sweden but only 29% of Swedes actually report as being religious (Sweden Institute).
