Reflection
In reflecting on the assumptions I had when I entered this course, those austere
assumptions as I look back have all been dealth with so methodically that they
are noted to be extremely different. I assumed that the research process in
dealing with variables, critiquing quantitative and qualitative literature would not
be realistic for me. However as I proceeded through the nursing research series
and the step-by-step guides I realized that it was not what I assumed, I am
managing quite nicely, so I just placed my fears aside and continued.
I am trying to search my mind of any challenge that I may have
encountered in the course, as the selected readings were so explicit whatever
challenged me I read it over for a better insight into the theory or framework. I
know I am not an interpreter of statistical results in the research study, I love
when it is worded, maybe that’s my challenge.
There are many aspects of the course that I believe are useful for my
practice. However I found that the most important aspect of this course, research
study is the most critical for evidence-based practice, therefore one of the main
reasons for this course is critiquing literature, which is the main element
promoting the believability, robustness, purpose or significance of a research
study, before it can be used as evidence. The ability to critique research is a
special valuable skill that is fundamental for nurses’ ability to base their clinical
practice, as it is evidence based on research. When caring for patients it is
essential that nurses are using current evidence for best practice (Coughlan,
Cronin & Ryan, (2007).

research, Part 2: Qualitative research. British Journal of Nursing, 16(12), 738744.
