Main topic for the discussion post
Yes, there are political prisoners in the world. Unfortunate men and women, certain classes, and
political dissidents are still suffering in some areas of the world. Read the articles A Call For
Aggressive Media Campaign Regarding DPRK Prison Camps by Lee (2014) and China’s
Perception and Policy About North Korea by Shulong (2015), which are required reading for this
week.
Human rights advocates are aware of this situation. (See this Human Rights Watch World Report
2017 – North Korea.) The U.S. government is aware of this situation. The Chinese government
continues to support the North Korean regime. Some cracks have opened in North Korea,
including some market activity (i.e., smuggling, black markets) since the famines of the late
1990s and early 2000s. Knowledge of the abuse of political prisoners in North Korea and other
dictatorial regimes is widespread.
For this discussion, respond to the following:

What could or should major world powers such as the United States and China do
to address the mistreatment and abuse of political prisoners in other countries?
Specifically, how can the United States help to reform the political culture in
those countries that arrest and abuse political prisoners?
Note: At the time of the latest revision of this course (May 2017), relations between the United
States and North Korea have become incredibly tense due to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions
and threats against its neighbors. President Donald Trump has not taken a military response to
the situation off the table. The situation is too fluid to continually update in the course materials,
so it will be important for you to check credible news sources prior to posting to this discussion
to make sure that your response takes into consideration the latest developments.
My post
Political prisoners are imprisoned because of political reasons mainly due to having a dissenting
political view with the ruling regimes (Sur, 2011). These prisoners are not given a fair judgment
since the ruling government interferes with the judiciary and pulls strings to ensure that these
prisoners spend time in jail and thus destroy their career as well as quench their voices that were
probably calling for equity. The United States is a superpower that has a stable democracy.
Therefore it can try to help out in those countries that unfairly imprison people due to political
reasons. One way that it can do this is to reach out to these countries in dialogue and try to
reason with them regarding these matters. Another way they can do this is to use one country and
grant sanctions to them so that they can act as an example to other nations that mistreat political
prisoners. Since the United States has influenced the global arena. They can push for
comprehensive reforms that address these matters so that the mistreatment of political prisoners
can end.
More specifically, the advocating of global reforms that push for a reformation of the
political culture of these nations can work towards changing the situation. These improvements
can specifically address and stipulate a standard which all political prisoners should be treated in
all nations. Any country that violates this should be subject to economic sanctions as well as
other repercussions. Since every country has ties to other countries and benefits from them one
way or another, they will not want to be singled out and sanctioned, and thus the situation will
improve.

Today’s focus of North Korea relies heavily on their ambitions to become a nuclear power. The
media has focused so heavily on this fact that North Koreas concentration camps have almost
been forgotten. There are currently six prison camps in North Korea that we know of, due to
satellite imagery. According to the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (2017) The
vicious and brutal prison camps of North Korea are populated by “those sent to the camp to
include officials perceived to have performed poorly in their job, people who have criticized the
regime, and anyone suspected of engaging in anti-government activities. However, some
Kaechon (camp 14) prisoners are victims of the regime’s “three generations of punishment,” in
which three generations of a prisoner’s family are also sent to the camp and may die there
without having committed a crime themselves.” North Koreas concentration camps are the heart,
and source of their domestic terror.
Major world powers such as the United States, China and even Russia could have a significant,
positive influence in de-escalating North Korea’s nuclear ambitions as well as combating their
domestic terror if they all didn’t have ulterior motives. To China, North Korea provides a buffer
zone from South Korea and their U.S. allies. Russia has a lot to gain from North Korea if they
choose to step in and up on their economic relations regarding trade and weapons as the U.S. and
China impose new sanctions and tighten those already in place. The U.S. and North Koreas
relations have diminished and became more drastic since North Koreas first nuclear test in 2006
and continued deteriorating through their accelerated nuclear testing program.
Diplomacy with North Korea has been attempted for the past 60 years to no avail. Since then
North Korea has only become stronger, more technologically advanced and even more brutal
than ever before. After decades of failed attempts of democracy the need for liberation and
political reform from the socialist regime is apparent. With collaboration from the U.S., China
and Russia this is more than possible.

The issue of human rights violation to the extent manhandle and abuse of political detainees is
concerned is unmistakable in North Korea. Confinement, self-assertive captures, oppression,
abuse and torment of prisoners stay noticeable major issues. Most nations have denounced the
practices and are attempting to mediate to enhance matters. Other than South Korea, world
powers like United States and Japan have each passed an Act named as the North Korea Human
Rights Act. However even after numerous times of regard for this issue, there has been no
important change in the genuine conditions in North Korea.
Many individuals attempt to escape the nation by paying fixes to authorities posted at
fringes and many do break through to China in spite of the strict controls. China should offer
assurance to such outcasts instead of keeping and repatriating them. China is obliged under the
standard global law and the Refugee Convention of 1951 and its 1967 convention to offer
assurance to such evacuees. China has additionally been under the scanner for tormenting such
outcasts and driving them back in spite of a formal demand from South Korean President.
Consequently, the Chinese Government must be touchier and make strict move against its
authorities who manhandle, torment, constrained work camps and notwithstanding trafficking
where the ladies are persuasively offered to Chinese men. Such ladies even in the wake of living
in China for quite a long time are not given legitimate habitation and acknowledgment. China
ought to guarantee that such outcasts and their kids ought to be given security and rudimentary
instruction.
The world powers ought to likewise force sanctions against nations, for example, North
Korea which abuse human rights. Other than forcing such endorses, United States specifically
can gather media consideration towards nations that abuse political detainees. The expanded
worldwide media consideration will put weight on such nations.
