Atomic/Nuclear “Scare” Films
Extra Credit
CJN 335
The flick “The House in the Middle” claims that good housekeeping can keep you safe in a
nuclear attack, so paint your fence! This interesting film used fears of nuclear attack to get
people to paint, clean, and repair their homes and property.
Burt the Turtle is your hero in the film “Duck and Cover” — a film designed to help children in
the case of a nuclear attack. The film is really about secondary effects (heat flash, light flash, and
flying shards) of a nuclear attack. This particular flick is more sensitive to diversity than many of
the time — some of the children shown are not white.
“About Fallout” is one of the standard sorts of films designed to reassure people that there are
things they can to improve the odds of survival in case of nuclear attack. As we noted in class,
some response and personal efficacy is needed in order for fear appeals to be effective; this film
plays on that.
“One World or None” goes so far as to animate little skulls in the various nuclear blasts as NYC
is devastated in cute cartoon footage. Real post-nuclear bomb blast footage includes Hiroshima
kids sporting their new “heat blast” hairdos.
So, here are your instructions. Please cite sources for any information (not simply for direct
quotes) not your own. Select a maximum of two of the films above. For each, please indicate:
1. In what year was the film made? What organization(s) are responsible for the creation of
each film? Be specific about sponsoring organization(s). Who was the creative
director/producer, etc., of the films? Do not simply rely on the film – do research.
2. What is the intended audience for the films. Be specific about the demographic
characteristics in this case. What can you tell about the psychographics of the intended
audiences? How do you know this?
3. What are the fear conditions established by the films? How accurate are the claims that
these will be problematic? How do you know?
4. How useful is the information in the films for reducing fear conditions? (Be cautious of
making claims without some evidence. Some of what you think you know is not
accurate.) Explain your claims.
5. Do you believe the film was effective for attempting to persuade its intended audience?
Why/why not?
