Introduction – A very brief profile of the firm and product or service. Further, a justification for
the choice of country/region and mode of entry should be discussed.
Dan and Dorthy Gerber first introduced Gerber Baby Foods in 1928 in Michigan. The inception
of the idea came from trying to find an easier method to strain fruits and vegetables for their 7month old daughter Sally. Dan and Dorthy realized the tedious process could be easily done at
the family Fremont Canning Company. Workers began requesting samples for their own babies,
and the history of Gerber Baby Foods began (Gerber.com).
Today, Gerber is known for being one of the first recognized baby food be sold in supermarkets
and nationally advertised. Their production of products and services are catered towards families
with infants and small children (Mergent online).
Gerber Products Co owns 3 major baby food plants in the US with Subsidiaries having facilities
or market presence in Venezuela, Costa Rica, Poland, Mexico, France, Canada, and Puerto Rico
(Edgar.com)
Macroenvironment – An analysis of the macroenvironment of the selected country/region with
an emphasis on its factors that are relevant to the firm, i.e., the analysis of Economic,
Socioeconomic, Financial, Cultural, and Political/Legal forces.
Initial country screening was done by looking at the top 25 countries in both the 2017
A.T. Kearney Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index as well as the 2009 MPI Index, as
evidenced by Exhibits A and B. While there are many countries that top both lists, we will
narrow our focus on five or so countries with high ratings in both: China, Germany, the United
Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Exhibit C shows detailed data regarding the population and
birth rate for each of these countries.
Competitive Analysis – Assess the market conditions (such as size of market, market growth
rate, consumers, sales analysis). Address how these conditions affected your firm’s competitive
advantage.
The baby food business is highly competitive. Gerber Products Co and its subsidiaries are
amongst the top 3 leading producer or seller in all of its regions (Edgar).
Financial Analysis – Assess how exchange rate regimes, country/region monetary policies, and
financial decisions affected the financial position of your firm.
Mode of Entry – A mode of entry into the foreign market(s) that you selected. Pertinent factors
surrounding this mode (for example, import regulations, customs, payment methods, etc., for
Exporting as a mode) should then be covered and how they affected your firm’s performance.
