THE INTERNET OF THINGS AND SECURITY CONCERNS
The term Internet of Things is over a decade old. But the actual concept of connected
devices had been around since the 1970s. The original idea was called “embedded internet” or
“pervasive computing”. But the actual term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin Ashton,
during his work at Procter & Gamble (P&G), in 1999 (Lueth, 2014).
WHAT IS THE INTERNET OF THINGS?
The Internet of things is becoming an increasingly growing topic of conversation both in
the workplace and outside of it. It’s a concept that not only has the potential to impact how we
live but also how we work (Morgan, 2014). It has the potential to reinvent the world. To make it
smarter, healthier, and more efficient.
The Common Misconception. People Generally misunderstand the Internet of Things to be a
special kind of device. However, the Internet of Things is described to be a concept in which
technology devices, ranging from coffee makers to cars to buildings, connect to the internet in an
attempt to create a unity between devices so that they can be operated autonomously or by afar
without the user having to physically be in front of the device and provide data from an aspect
not previously available..

Current Applications of the Internet of Things. Believe it or not, Internet of Things devices
already exist among us today. Some of the earliest connected devices were ATMs (Automated
Teller Machine) (Leuth, 2014). Experts are predicting that 50 billion devices will connect to the
internet by 2020 (Baraje, 2014). Some of the most common Internet of Things devices today are
commercial products which include smart television sets, set-top boxes, and streaming boxes
such as Roku or amazon fire products, kitchen appliances, and other home accessories. Other
applications of the Internet of Things lie within large scale industries segments across the globe
such as connected industry, smart city, and smart energy. Connected industry, the largest Internet
of Things user in the industry segment, uses Internet of Things devices, primarily in the oil & gas
and factory environments, to remotely monitor and optimize heavy assets, operate cranes,
factories, or even entire mines. Smart city, the second largest user of Internet of Things devices,
use this concept in traffic management and utilities to analyze traffic and allow devices outside
the car to assist the driver while operating a vehicle. The smart energy industry uses this concept
in initiatives such as the smart Grid, which is an attempt to intelligently regulate energy usage
autonomously throughout an entire sector, and has a strong push in the United States and other
SECURITY CONCERNS OF THE INTERNET OF THINGS
Internet of Things and Enterprise Risks. Internet of Things devices are found in many places and
settings in today’s world and the enterprise and corporate settings are no exception. No matter
how promising the idea of connected devices seems, businesses have to more cautious than ever
to ensure that they make the most out of this idea in order to be effective and efficient without
compromising the security of an entire network or valuable data.

One of the most dangerous forms of cyber attacks are distributed denial of services
(DDOS) attacks. In this kind of attack, multiple devices attempt to bring down a network by
deploying a large number of requests until the system cannot handle and process the requests,
resulting in a crash. This same concept could be applied to Internet of Things devices in that an
attacker could use the devices to their advantage by gaining access to a single network, which
could contain multiple devices, and send a command telling the devices to send packets over to a
specific server until said server goes offline. If an attacker were to successfully bring down a
company website, this would be detrimental to the business as this can result in revenue loss for
companies such Visa or MasterCard that rely on their servers to regulate their income, which
comes from commision every time a customer uses their card for purchases (Kumar, 2015).
