Expert answer:Psychological concepts in The Blind Side

Expert answer:MOVIE: THE BLIND SIDEI already have a lot of it written down I just need help putting it together. For this paper, you will watch a film and analyze it from the social psychological perspective.
First, pick a film you would like to analyze and watch it. After watching your film, you will need
to identify THREE specific concepts from class that are illustrated in this film. (Specific
concepts means something more than just “attitudes” or “prejudice”. For example, if you picked
attitudes, you could discuss the disconnect between attitudes and behaviors, the experience of
cognitive dissonance, or sources of attitudes.)
In your paper, you need to clearly explain your three concepts and how they can be seen in the
movie. You will need to provide a specific description of how the concept is conveyed. For
example, if it is part of the plot explain how. If it is part of the character development, behavior
in a scene, evident in dialogue or something else explain how the concept is illustrated. Lastly,
you will need to assess whether or not the film portrays social psychology accurately – here it is
helpful to think of some of the experiments we talked about in class. Do the experimental
findings support the depiction of your social psychological concepts in the film?
Almost any film will work for this assignment, but only some can be used.
 Your film should be fiction, and therefore cannot be a documentary or one based on true
events. Additionally, you MAY NOT use the following films for this assignment:
o 12 Angry Men, American History X, Fight Club, Shrek
o If you disregard this direction, you will get a 0 on your final paper, no
exceptions.
General details:
Your paper should be roughly 5 typed pages, assuming regular font-size, margin and 1.5
spacing. Please focus more on content than length – make sure that you include and explain all of
the relevant material.
While the structure of your paper may vary slightly, you should plan on having the following
paragraphs:  Introduction for paper
 Brief overview of film (the key word here is brief – focus on a summary that includes
only important aspects)
 Identification and explanation of concept 1
 Evidence for concept 1 in film
 Identification and explanation of concept 2
 Evidence for concept 2 in film
 Identification and explanation of concept 3
 Explanation for concept 3 in film
 Assessment of accuracy in film depiction of concepts
 Concluding paragraph

Psychology in Film: Paper Outline
Film: The movie I chose is The Blind Side. The film evolves around a homeless African
American teenager named Michael Oher, who has been drifting in and out of the
schooling system for years. That’s when Leigh Anne Tuohy and her husband take him in
and adopt him. The Tuohys eventually become Michael’s legal guardians, transforming
both his life and theirs. His sheer size and over protective instincts make him an insane
force on the gridiron. With help from his new family and devoted tutor, he realizes his
potential as a student and football player.
Concept 1: The concept of conformity is very apparent in the movie. Conformity is the
process by which an individual’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors are influenced by what
is conceived to be what other people might perceive. When Michael got expelled by the
family of a mechanic who was a family that cared for him. Michael did not have any
where else to stay to adapt to school life. Michael perform in accordance with the world
around and out of exile shop . He’s doing this just because he tried to not get bullied,
the pressure of being rejected, and the countless social and criticism from the
surrounding neighborhood that he experienced.
Concept 2: Another strong concept in the movie is perception. Perception is “the ability
to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses to produce a
meaningful experience of the world.” On “The Blind Side” Michael’s success is due to
the fact that he is a minority who is a lot more talented in football than the average
person. So that is a recognition of his amazing talent and it caused him to be more
accepted by the society that surrounds him and has been judging him for a while. It is
case of positive minority that brings a lot of success.
Concept 3: The third concept that is strongly shown in the movie is serotype. “A
stereotype is any thought widely adopted about specific types of individuals or certain
ways of behaving intended to represent the entire group of those individuals or
behaviors as a whole. These thoughts or beliefs may or may not accurately reflect
reality.” Throughout the movie, Michael or as they sometimes call him “big Mike’ has
been stereotyped his whole life. At the start, people thought of Mike as a an
unattractive, badly behaved, poorly educated, and an incompetent being, and a lot of it
was due to him being African American. However, Mike proves later on that he can be
just as successful if not more than a White person.
