Section 1: Critical approach group
Historic
1. What language/characters/events present in the work reflect the current events of the
author’s day?
2. Are there words in the text that have changed their meaning from the time of the writing?
3. How are events’ interpretation and presentation a product of the culture of the author?
4. Does the work’s presentation support or condemn the event?
5. How does the work consider traditionally marginalized populations?
Section 2: Group Questions
1. Recall the scene in chapter 1 in which Nick goes to the Buchanan’s for dinner. A similar
scene takes place near the beginning of chapter 7. The relationships between the
characters have changed. Address TWO of the following questions:
a. Describe how the characters view each other.
b. Look at the events of the two gatherings. Do they seem similar?
c. What’s different between Daisy’s treatment of her daughter now and in chapter 1?
d. Why do you think Daisy mentioned that her daughter “doesn’t look like her
father”?
2. Does Daisy love Tom? Does she love Gatsby? At what point is it clear to you which one
Daisy loves? At what point does Daisy choose either Tom or Gatsby? What evidence can
you give? What behaviors does she display or doesn’t display? What did she say, or
didn’t say?
3. At the beginning of chapter 8, it’s clear that Daisy chose Tom, so why does Gatsby insist
on hanging around when there’s a chance he’ll be arrested for killing Myrtle?
4. “But he didn’t despise himself and it didn’t turn out as he imagined… but now he found
that he had committed himself to the following of a grail.” (See:
http://www.history.com/news/ask-history/what-is-the-holy-grail. You can check
Wikipedia, but their description is more involved.) This suggests that Daisy is, in the eyes
of Gatsby, the Holy Grail. What is its significance? Is Gatsby’s quest the same? What is
the American public’s Holy Grail?
5. Read the conversation between Michaelis and Wilson near the end of chapter 8. What
does the conversation tell you about Wilson? Think back to the beginning of chapter 2
and the Valley of the Ashes. Compare and contrast Wilson and the Valley of Ashes.

is it that actually makes a human being happy?” First, what does Myers think makes us
