ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT
2
Abstract
This paper will examine the environmental movement in the United States of America, its
evolution and phases of ecological progress. Briefly, this campaign was first initiated to conserve
parts of the US that were perceived to be for only the rich in which their primary concern was the
protection and management of the natural resources. However, this has changed from 19th
century to date, classifying the initiative into four phases (Rootes, 2014). These are modern
environmentalism, conservation, and preservation, the rise of grassroots environmentalism and
mainstream environmentalism. This concern has led to the increase of lots of movements whose
aim is to protect, manage and conserve both natural and human-made resource for people’s
continuity and survival.
ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT
3
Introduction
Environmental issues have been the talk of every corner of the world in which world
leaders are concerned with the rate at which human beings have continuously destroyed the
natural environment (Rootes, 2014). Among these problems is the global warming, pollution of
water resources as well as the vegetation cover. The government of the US has developed
mechanisms of ensuring the environment gets protected by working with other social and nongovernmental organizations.
Importance of the study
The reason why I chose this topic is that the environment directly affects us in our daily
activities and the rate at which it gets destroyed by ourselves is very heartbreaking. According to
various environmentalists, the initiative of protecting the environment started long ago when it
was meant for only the rich. This movement was called the preservation and conservation
campaign, and its mandate was to ensure natural resources were not destroyed due to
development and industrialization that had started in the US (Dunlap, 2014). This era led to
another one which was called modern environmentalism which addressed the human activities
that contaminate water and air through chemical substances resulting in pollution. This ushered
in the mainstream environmentalism era in the 1970s whose concern was to mobilize all the
Americans including the corporate world to fight environmental degradation (Dunlap, & Xiao,
2013). This faces some challenges, and after that, the current era of grassroots environmentalism
began. This made various social, governmental and non-governmental organizations to
mushroom in the US to protect and conserve the environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT
Through this research, I hope to learn much about the role the government and other
NGOs play in ensuring they stop this high rate of degradation and what are the countermeasures
to mitigate this problem and global warming as a whole.
