Portfolio Project Option #2: 3 Persons that Represent America
Part I
You have just been hired by a new history magazine. It is your job to nominate three (3) persons who best reflect
characteristics of the “long” twentieth century in American history. Each person must be from a different era, as
follows: one each from 1877-1920, 1921-1945, and 1945 to the present. The person can be famous, or lesser known,
or even a representation (e.g., the American soldier, etc.). Explain why each person is important and what he or she
represents about American history and American identity. You could choose to unite your three persons by theme
(e.g., civil rights activists) or you could choose three individuals who represent three different themes or
characteristics in American history.
Your essay should consider the following questions:
•
•
•
•
•
What did each person do that was important or influential and how did he or she help change the
nation?
How did that person interact with the wider world?
What obstacles did he or she have to overcome?
How did your persons handle or manage the contrasts and contradictions they faced?
Did they leave any problems unsolved?
The paper is due at the end of week 8 and must adhere to the following requirements:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Must contain a clear thesis statement, or claim, that is supported by the evidence you present
Adhere to CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements
Must be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman type
Include 7- to 8-pages in length (not including cover and reference pages; approximately 3,0003,500 words)
Include headings, per APA guidelines
Your discussion of each person should incorporate two primary sources (for a total of six primary
sources). In addition to these, the entire written Portfolio should include four additional academic
sources for a grand total of ten sources.
Sources should be adequately chosen to provide substance and perspectives on the issue.
Part II
Create a visual presentation that illustrates your portrayal of the “long” twentieth century and the struggles and
triumphs of the three individuals you chose to discuss.
The presentation is due at the end of Week 8 and must adhere to the following requirements:
•
•

PORTFOLIO OUTLINE:
THREE PEOPLE IN AMERICAN HISTORY THAT HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT IN
WORLD SUPERPOWER DOMINANCE
I.
Introduction
This section will introduce the topic, the thesis and the major issues the essay will be concerned
about.
Thesis: United States of America dominance as a superpower occurred in a sequence of events,
mainly those controlled by President Woodrow Wilson, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
and President Harry S. Truman, who organized the three historic events, engagement in the First
World War, retaliation against the Pearl Habour attack by Japan, and dropping of the atomic
bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima respectively.
II.
President Woodrow Wilson and the engagement in world war one
A. President Wilson declared that US engagement into the war was for restoring peace and
not for waging war. This decision alienated US from the rest of the parties in the war. It
prevented the other countries from attacking the US.
B. The president took time before engaging in the war, only engaging in the war at a time
when it was becoming tough for the war to end.
C. The decision to engage in the war for purposes of bringing it to an end also helped in
giving the US peace and time to continue producing food and equipment, which they sold
to the other countries engaging in the war.
AMERICAN DECISIONS THAT LED TO SUPERPOWER DOMINANCE
III.
3
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the retaliation against the Pearl Habour
attack
A. His speech that declared war on Japan helped to show to the world that the US was ready
to wage war on any one that attacked the US.
B. His speech also showed his bravery and stand on defending any territory or ally of the
US, thus showing the solidarity of the US people.
C. The decision to engage in World War II also helped to show the US position and power
internationally. They had to be involved in any activity that occurred on a global scale.
IV.
President Harry S. Truman and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and
Hiroshima
A. The dropping of the bombs helped to show that world that the US was ready to engage in
war with any country that defied international rules and regulations.
B. The decision to drop the bombs was also a retaliation against crimes commuted towards
US citizens, especially attacks orchestrated by Japan, like the Pearl Harbor attack.
V.
Conclusion
This section summarizes the contents of the paper and ends with a final statement on how
the US has dominated the world as a superpower, the world police and overseer of the world
security.
