The Final Examination questions released December 8th (Friday) and will be due December 14th
(Thursday) @ midnight. The exam will cover the Better and Hinesmon-Matthews textbooks,
class discussions, films, and lectures. You will select two (2) of the questions listed and prepare
a critical analysis essay of the subject.

attribution apply to this exam as would a take-home exam: All sources should be cited.
The essays should be between 800 – 1000 words per question and prepare them on one single
document and each essay is worth 50 points.
Criteria for Evaluation of Essays:
A. Thesis – The all-important first paragraph. Remember to: Define your thesis –
Specifically what will be analyzed, and why is it important? Also, provide an Argument
or methodology – What analytical tools are being used? Comparison? Contrast?
Evaluation? Examination? What set of criteria form the basis of judgment? (theoretical
orientation).
B. Body – 3 body paragraphs. This should be a point by point expansion of the thesis.
Each paragraph should reflect and aspect of fact that is analyzed and related to the
established argument. Use a standard system (footnote, endnotes, or parenthetic notes)
to cite your sources.
C. Summary / Conclusion – The final paragraph of the paper should draw together the
essential features of body into a summarized synthesis of exactly how they support the
thesis. In addition, this portion of the piece should conclude or direct the reader to come
to a conclusion on the meaning of the paper.
QUESTIONS: You are to select two (2) questions from the list below and write a 800 – 1000

1.) Explain why schools have become more segregated over the past thirty years, despite the
Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which declared segregation illegal.
What else is going on in American society that has facilitated the re-segregation of American
schools?
2.) Race is often taken to refer to minorities. When you think of the word “whiteness” what
comes to mind? Why is it difficult to see whites and whiteness as a race as well? What does it
tell us about the politics of race that the term is so readily associated with minorities and so
rarely applied to whites?
3.) Provide evidence that the United States is not a post-racial society, despite the historic
elections of President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. What would a post-racial society look
like? Should we aspire to be post-racial? Why or why not?
4.) What does it mean to be culturally competent? Why does cultural competence
matter? What can be done to enhance cultural competence?
5.) According to psychologist Derald Wing Sue, “Micro-aggressions are the everyday verbal,
nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional,
which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely
upon their marginalized group membership. He has argued that the impact of subtle prejudice,
such as micro-aggressions, is more harmful than the impact of blatant discrimination. Do you
agree or disagree with this proposition? Explain your answer.
6.) Why do you think the desire to transcend race is so prevalent in our society today? What
feelings arise when considering that we might be unable to transcend race in our lifetime?
