INTRO:
We have talked about the ‘tools’ or ‘controls’ that a Project Manager has at their disposal to
manage costs on projects. These ‘tools’ or ‘controls’ are not merely constructs, but tried and
tested methods that form the basis of ‘project control systems’ critical to a projects success, and
on which the majority of project managers put their faith. These systems exist in more forms and
flavors than ever before. But are they all up to the challenge?
ASSIGNMENT:
For this assignment you will be asked to research and report on one project control system that is
currently in use in the construction industry. You will be required to prepare a written and verbal
report, as outlined below:
Written Format
The assignment should be presented in a professional format. For the control system you
choose to report on, provide at a minimum the following information.
1. Name and function of the example.
2. Brief description of its history, development, how you were made aware of it,
are/were you a user of the system, current market share, etc.
3. How it is used in the setting you discovered/researched it in.
4. Observations on: efficiency, ease of use, popularity (within the setting you
observed it in or overall marketplace), pros, cons, etc.
5. Cost information (if available).
6. Any other observations.
7. Summary and overall opinion of the product.
8. Slide notes of Power Point presentations/other presentation material.
***NOTE: If the system is proprietary and you are unable to disclose certain
aspects of it-please make a note of it in your report
Verbal Presentation
Students will be responsible for preparing a 5-10 min discussion with the following
components:
1. Introduction and description of product.
2. Uses/ Usefulness.
3. How to use/implement the product.***
4. Observations of effectiveness, and summary of opinion on viability.
5. Recommendation for adoption.
***NOTE: If possible the presentation should include a product demo
showing the functions and features of the product utilizing simulated
construction project data.
NOTES:
Thursday November 16th, you will need to produce the following:
1. A document that outlines the software/system you have chosen that meets the
criteria for ‘project control’-and is approved by the instructor.
2. Duplicates within sections will not be allowed-make your choice early as it is first
