LAB: Citizen Activism or Journalism
1. Part 1:
Citizen journalism has been radically changing the way we produce and consume news and reports
of events around the world. As Sahar Khamis notes, “citizen journalism [provides] forums for
ordinary citizens to document protests; to spread the word about ongoing activities; to provide
evidence of governmental brutality; and to disseminate their own words and images to each other,
and, most importantly, to the outside world through both regional and transnational media.”
For this project, you will identify a current event or controversy that people may have a wide range of
views about or it can be an issue or topic connected to one of the group projects. Characterize the
reporting style of this citizen activism or journalism: how has Twitter (particularly hashtags) become
part of the information relay or following on this issue or topic?; what visuals accompany the activism
or reporting or what ones are followers or independent end users sharing on the event or issue?;
what other forums are reporting on this issue or topic and does that yield differences in perspectives
and how so?; in the blogs, what do you notice about those responding to articles or information
posted?.

2. PART 2:
be sure to include your 50-150 word statement in which you discuss your process and any
difficulties or issues encountered; also, tell something about the how/why of choices made
along the way.
1. Part 1:
A recent event that has been receiving international attention is the declaration of
independence in Catalonia. The small region of Spain, located in the northeast along the border
of France, had a vote within their local government in which they decided to become an
independent state. The significance of this is would be the most recent change to European
territories since the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Because of the way this occurred and
Catalonia’s importance to Spain, the national government has prevented their independence.
Also, many international countries refuse to recognize them as a new nation. Members of
Catalonia’s local government have been imprisoned including President, Carles Puidgemont. As
a result, millions of Catalonians have protested and voiced their opinions in efforts of freeing
their leaders and pushing for independence.
Hours ago in Barcelona, a popular city in Catalonia, the streets were filled with
supporters of Catalan independence urging for the freedom of their political leaders. Included
below are images of Twitter posts that show the rallies along with #FreedomPolticalPrisoners a
now trending topic. A common language style in many of the tweets is use of the word “defend”.
The protesters state their reasoning for the rallies is defending their Catalan Republic. Another
activist uses Twitter to encourage the European Union to intervene on Spain’s methods of
handling the situation. In his tweet posted below, notice the thousands of likes and retweets as
others join to spread the word.
Twitter as a social media platform has enabled a collective group of people to voice their
opinions and echo their pleas to an international audience. In the past, their efforts may have
been played down, censored, or otherwise ignored, but now citizens activism plays an equal, if
not greater and more influential role than professional journalism. Interestingly, each of Sahar
Khamis’ notes on the impact of citizen journalism were displayed through the Twitter posts
below. Regular citizens were able to document protests, spread news of current events, show
government brutality, and relay information to each other and abroad.
2. PART 2:
Being a soccer fan, I keep up to date with many news regarding to popular teams across Europe.
Barcelona, a major team in the Spanish league, just so happened to be at the center of attention
due to its location in the Catalan region. This led me to investigate its situation and made for a
great current event to cover for this lab. I researched the independence declaration and then
looked through Twitter to find what citizens of the area were doing/saying. Without even
thinking about it, most of the posts I found supported Sahar Kamis’ notes on citizens activism.
Overall, I did not find any difficulties along the way and it turned out to be an interesting lab that
showed the power and influence of ordinary citizens.
