FOCUS FOR THIS ESSAY
Choose ONE topic from the following five to write this short essay on. Each one
comes from a different article in the McIntyre text, Chapters 26 – 40. These are taken
from the study questions found at the end of each article, so they are ones that are
already familiar to you from your reading. (Must be submitted as Word document
or .rtf)
1. Emile Durkheim, “The Normality of Crime”
Does Durkheim believe that it is either possible or desirable for a society to exist
in which there is no crime? Evaluate and explain why or why not.
2. Steven H. Lopez, Randy Hodson and Vincent J. Roscigno “Power, Status, and
Abuse at Work: General and Sexual Harrassment”
Lopez, Hodson & Roscigno analyze the different contexts, or circumstances, in which
various forms of harassment can occur in the workplace. Distinguish between the
primary forms of harassment they present, and compare the contexts in which they
can take place.
3. Joe Fr. Feagin “Racism”
Create a list of the varieties of anti-black racist acts that were described by black
people in Feagin’s article. Assume that these kinds of discriminatory acts are
familiar to just about every black person in the US. Identify which discriminatory
acts on your list are the sort the average white person is likely to have many
opportunities to personally observe and understand as racist? Critically analyze your
answer.
4. Adriane Fugh-Berman, M.D. “Tales Out of Medical School”
According to Fugh-Berman’s 1992 account, the gender ratio was usually skewed
at Georgetown’s medical school. In your judgment, would there be less sexism if
the ratio of men to women was more equal? Evaluate and discuss why or why
not? Do not argue this question from an emotional point of view but from specific
material you have learned, know, about gender and sexism.
5. Randall Collins “The Sociological Eye and Its Blinders”
Collins says that the core of sociology is the “sociological eye.” Discuss what this
is. And, explain why he says that activism can be a blinder to these eyes?
Format for Paper – Essay: 2 – 3 pages long, double-spaced with 1” margins Use
only #12 font, no larger, and only black ink. No title page is needed. Include a
bibliography ONLY if you use resources other than course materials. Check for
grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation as you would any final piece of work.
NOTE: A formal essay is written in ‘third person’ – do not use “I”, unless you are
answering a question that asks for your opinion. This essay is to be in your own
words, so you are limited to ONE quote only from your sources – no more than
ONE sentence long. Cite page numbers in ( ) at the end of the quote, i.e.,
(McIntyre, pg. 349). If you use non-English words, they should be in italics or
underlined. Be careful about “paraphrasing” in your essay. If you are unsure of
your choice of words, phrases, etc., REMEMBER: THIS MUST BE IN YOUR
OWN WORDS. Simply changing a few words IS NOT your original work.
A formal essay should include: 1) thesis statement; 2) presentation of theoretical
argument(s)/analysis logically and clearly stated with examples and data; and 3) a
conclusion. An ‘A’ essay should reflect a thorough understanding of the text and
information covered in applicable course lectures.
Do not assume THE READER, knows about this topic. You must be clear and
concise in your writing. This is not a BRAIN DUMP of all you can think of that
might fit! Therefore, do not rely on generalities; be able to argue/explain your
statements. This is what good writing is to reflect.
SHORT ANSWERS – Course Lectures Answer 1 question for each Section 5, 6, 7 &
2 or Section 8
These questions are taken from the material presented in lectures for Sections 5 – 8.
These are not mini-essays. Depending on your writing style and the content of your
answer, you should be able to answer them in approximately 300 – 400 words for
each question.
Remember: You should be able to demonstrate clear understanding of the material in
an articulate, focused answer. Even though this Part 1 is Short Answer, organize your
thoughts around a logical, theoretical argument
. 1) Begin with a Thesis Statement: it defines the goal of your answer
2) Present main points supported by examples from your course readings OR you
may use examples from your personal experiences, if they are applicable.
3) A Conclusion summarizes your argument(s) and redefines your Thesis Statement.
These 3 steps would also be employed in a longer essay.
NO DIRECT QUOTES ARE ALLOWED – use your own words. This illustrates your
understanding of the topic or concept
IN THIS Final Exam – Part 1: These 5 Short Answers are to be your own thoughts;
what perspective you are developing from the course materials. Points will be
deducted if you use direct quotes or paraphrase lecture material. Be aware that simply
changing a few words does not make it your own work. Follow all directions for
Answer selections.
Number each answer for the question(s) you have chosen & single-space.
Section 5 Lectures Choose 1
1. Explain how a sociological view of deviance differs from the commonsense idea
that bad people do bad things.
2. An old saying is “stick and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt
me.” Describe how labeling theory challenges this statement.
Section 6 Lectures Choose 1
1. Demonstrate how social stratification is a creation of society rather than simply an
expression of individual differences.
2. Compare and contrast the differences and common elements between caste and
class systems. Evaluate the ways industrialization introduces a measure of
meritocracy to social stratification.
Section 7 Lectures Choose 1
1. Describe what the key factors are that impact a person’s health. Analyze why
health is as much a social as a biological issue.
2. Explain why there are ethical concerns and issues regarding death. Discuss what
these key factors are.
3. Identify how a society’s sociocultural values are part of the way they view death,
dying and even mourning.
Section 8 Lectures {Week 8} Choose 1
1. Analyze and explain what some of the most important ways are that the economy
and political life influence one another.
2. Define political ideologies and political symbols. Discuss the key elements of each
one and give at least one example of each.

1. Select either of the two YouTube video lectures [links posted with Week 8 in
Learning Resources]
A: Professor Francis Fukuyama – “The Origins of Political Order”
B. Dr. Mohammed Bhuiyan – “Using Politics to Combat Greed and Poverty”
Determine what information either lecturer is trying to convey to his audience.
Identify and briefly explain the key focus and concepts of his presentation from
your chosen video. And, briefly state what value you think your chosen video
had for your perspective on the institutions of politics and economics.
