According to the theory of comparative advantage, developed by David Ricardo in 1817, a
country having the lower opportunity cost of production than another in producing a good should engage
in the production of that (Pettinger, 2017). Based on the comparative advantages in term of natural
resources endowment, technological expertise, labor availability etc., a country decides on production and
exporting (after meeting up local demand) of some goods, and importing of other goods (Gandolfo,
2014).
Chile is a trading partner of the United States. In 2016, total import, and total export of the USA
with the Chile were USD 8797002 (000), and USD 12921843 (000) respectively (United States Census
Bureau, 2017). Two important goods traded in between the United States and Chile are fruits and frozen
juices, and industrial machines.
Chile has a comparative advantage in fruits production (table grape, apple, plum, cherry, avocado,
raspberry etc.) and frozen juices processing (China Go Abroad, 2017). Mild Mediterranean-style climate
and natural phytosanitary protection provide Chile better environment of fruits production and frozen
juices processing. The opportunity cost of Chile is lower than that of the United States in fruits production
and frozen juices processing. This causes Chile to focus on specializing in fruits production and frozen
juices processing. The United States relies highly on the Chile in meeting its fruits and frozen juices
demand. Total import of the fruits and frozen juices of the United States from Chile over the last five
years (2012 – 2016) were USD 1518653 (000), USD 1856474 (000), USD 1889076 (000), USD 2003559
(000), and USD 2277148 (000) (United States Census Bureau, 2017).
The United States has a comparative advantage in the production of industrial machinery due to
high technological skill and expertise, innovative capacity, and efficiency in production (Noeth, 2017).
The opportunity cost of the United States is lower than that of the Chile in industrial machinery
production. This causes the United States to focus on specializing in industrial machinery production. The
United States after meeting of the industrial machinery of local demand exports surplus industrial
machinery to the rest of the world including Chile. Total export of the industrial machinery of the United
States to Chile over the last five years (2012 – 2016) were USD 363840 (000), USD 371681 (000), USD
393691 (000), USD 375189 (000), and USD 326698 (000) (United States Census Bureau, 2017).
