In Contempt Book Report
Book written by Cosmas Nwokeafor Uchenna
This report is based upon the book in contempt, written by Cosmas Nwokeafor Uchenna. This
book is published by instant Publisher Co. pub date 1/1/2008
Introduction to the author
The author of this book Cosmas Uchenna Nwokeafor is a professor of mass communication at
Bowie State University. The professor is currently serves as the dean of the graduate school and
he has also served before as the provost fellow and assist provost for the graduate studies at the
same university he is currently heading.
Summary of the book
I found this book to be well written and well thought. Many readers will assume that the author
of the book intended to scare away Africans from raising their children abroad. I, however don’t
believe this to be true. The way the writer speaks of the challenges encountered when African
children are raised in foreign nations shows that he really want these challenges to be eliminated
through development of mechanisms so that children will be raised anywhere whether in western
countries or in African countries.
Body
The main challenges faced by children when they are raised in a foreign country are language
barriers, civic disengagement and social tension (Nwokeafor, 2008). The cultural difference is
real and always it is there because people are coming from different nations where cultural
practices are different. People are doing things differently and also think differently in different
parts of the world. According to the author of the book when cultures collide, bringing up
African children in foreign countries is very difficult for the children faces cultural shock. The
author also suggests that parents and guardians should develop strategies that will create a
mutual understanding of the children and the foreign country. People who come from diverse
cultures share specific basic concepts and the difference comes in due to differences in the way
people view the basic concepts in total different perspectives and also in different angles which
is shaping people in the way they are behaving rationally and irrationally depending on the
context they are in. Western communication engages in a direct communication which, which is
in contrast to the African style that engage indirect communication (Nwokeafor C. U., 2008).
Based on the information contained in the book, “When Cultures Collide: The Challenges of
Raising African Children in a Foreign Country ‘’. The author states that the biggest change in
person’s life is to start a new life in another country. The challenges which are experienced as a
result of raising African children in a foreign country include the culture difference, language
barrier and parenting. The main objective of the author of this book was to communicate the
difficulties faced by the parents when they are raising children in a foreign country where the
culture and language is different from their own. By learning this, the parents who are planning
to go and live in another country will be aware of the challenges they are going to face and how
they are going reduce these challenges by developing mechanism to of adapting to the cultural
diversity (Nwokeafor C. U., 2008). Some of the challenges the author of this book discusses is
culture differences in African cultures with those of foreign countries and language barriers.
When the African children are raised in a foreign country, the children quickly learns the
language of their new language but the parents finds it hard to learn the new language and may
take longer for them to learn it. The children learn the language faster and even begin to think in
it. As the children grow in that foreign country, the language difficulties can lead to creation of
communication gap which is very difficult to bridge it (Nwokeafor C. U., 2008). The culture of
the new country also influences the way the African children feels and the parents finds the
reactions of the children to be very hard to understand. The African parents’ feels lonely and
frustrated in the foreign country due to language differences because it is hard for them to
communicate with the people in the foreign country and therefore the friends they make are very
few. Because of this, the parents’ finds work very difficult and also the every day’s event is
made harder. On the side of children, they will struggle a lot in school when they are making
friends and even when they are communicating with teachers if the language the teachers uses to
teach is not spoken by the children.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I found this book to be very useful because it builds confidents to everyone that is
visiting another country that despite the challenge they are going to face as they raise their
children in a foreign nation, they can overcome them by developing mechanisms which will use
to minimize they face as parents and those faced too by children. When I began reading the
book, I thought it would be boring but later I found it enjoyable and informative for it is
intelligently written.
