Is a Research Project that will give you a taste of what it is like to do an
ethnographic study of gender?
This research project requires that you do some extended observation
of a social context of your choosing in which gender is constructed.
Based on your observations, you will write a paper that:
1)Describes the context of your fieldwork and the construction of gender
you observed there; and
2) Draws on a global perspective, and your knowledge of how gender
plays out in different parts of the world, to offer an interpretation or
analysis of a particular aspect or feature of gender that you think is
interesting or important within the social context you have chosen.
This project will be conducted, and submitted, in 4 steps.
Step 1: Literature Review
In this assignment you need to do the following:
1 Choose a social context in which gender is constructed. Choose
wisely, you will use the same social context for steps 2-4 of this
assignment
2 Write a literature review of the social context you have chosen
3 Your title should be ” The Social Construction of Gender in shopping
Malls (Social Context)”
The literature review must include:
1.Three academic sources (Published journals and books) relevant to
the social context and topic of your choosing.
2. Your own critical analysis of key questions raised in the existing
literature
3. The value and limitations of methods used
4. Important insights drawn and opportunities for future and further
inquiry.
5. How the insights from the three different sources can be synthesized,
including how they support or conflict with one another
A strong literature review will provide a solid theoretical foundation for
the second stage of this project, which involves your own observations
in the field.
