OBJECTIVE:
Assist students on understanding the principles of environmental engineering design (e.g. design
wastewater treatment facility). Students will learn the treatment procedures for providing safe,
dependable products of water to families, market and farming and in protecting the quality of
water in rivers, lakes, aquifers and around seaside locations. Involvement of students in the
design of environmental engineering system such as wastewater treatment engineering introduce
students to the challenging and complexity of design any environmental engineering system.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of principles underlying environmental engineering
design
2. Identify stakeholders and present alternative viewpoints on engineering projects
3. Take into consideration the complex, local and global, social political cultural and
ecological contexts in performing a technical role or designing an engineering system
4. Take into consideration the impact of decisions on the environment and society.
TASK:
Every student is required to prepare a conceptual design for a wastewater treatment system for a
small town or an industrial wastewater. You are required to discuss the following:
1. Types of pollutants produce
2. The treatment units and processes (flowchart)

3. The specification of the unit processes to be included in the treatment system
4. The water quality that would result from the system in term of quality, national and
international standard, social and cultural acceptance, and ecological impact.
Note: You are free to discuss a design or analysis any wastewater project of your own choosing.
Report Format
Number of pages: Maximum 10 pages excluding references list and the appendix (if any).
Line spacing: Generally use 1.5 x line spacing.
Start with the title page (including your name) or student number as requested.
It is preferable to place figures within the text rather than group them at the end of the
report.
Give a sequential number to all figures (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, etc.)
Add a brief, informative caption to the figures.
Report Sections
Report Proposal [10 marks]
Your proposal should include the following:
Step 1 – Executive Summary/Introduction (approximately 1 paragraph)
The Introduction is the most important section of the proposal – it will either get your reader’s
attention or send them to the next proposal. To be effective, you want to outline the proposal and
convince the reader that your proposal should be accepted. Specifically:
A. State the problem/need that you are going to address.
B. Provide a short description of the project, including what you propose, who it will benefit.
D. Strong concluding statement.
Step 2 – Project Description (Maximum one Page)
This section defines the project objectives, describes the method of solution, and defines staffing
and administrative requirements. Include the following sections (each of these sections should
have a separate section heading and may have more than one paragraph).
1. Objectives – State your objectives as measurable outcomes of the solution. Be specific make sure your solution is achievable within a specific time frame and measurable.
2. Method – Describe the specific action items (actions that need to be taken in order to meet
the objectives). Answer the following questions: How, When, and Why.
3. Management Plan – Present “Time Plan” Only in your project.

Step 3 – Conclusion (Approximately 1 paragraph)
Review your proposal briefly. Restate what you want to do and why it’s important.
Tips:
1. Proofread! Check spelling and punctuation.
2. Be clear. Be concise.
3. Remember your goals and audience. Managers look for cost-effectiveness. Engineers
look at feasibility.

Abstract (maximum 1/2 page) [5 marks]
The abstract must be brief, but it has to tell the following:
The main objective.
Methodology; write about the main sections involved in the report.
Core results obtained; preferably not more than 2 sentences.
Conclusion; one or two sentences are recommended.

Introduction (maximum 2 pages) [10 marks]
The introduction is very important as it sets the context for the report. Summarize the brief,
briefly outline the case and focus on its significance (problem statement), state the report’s aim
(objective), and describe how the report is organized (methodology). It is not usual to detail
findings or recommendations in the introduction.
3.
Case study (report body) [60 marks]
The previous sections (abstract & introduction) are preliminary sections. Case study’s body
section is organized as follows:
Headings should be informative and descriptive providing a clue to the contents of the section.

Describe the context of the case. Present the central issue you will be analyzing, what
decisions have already been made, what communication processes are occurring in the
situation. Focus on the facts.
Explain your methodology. Identify problems that are demonstrated in the case.
Present summaries of your findings and indicate how you decide for your design, and
what is acceptable/not acceptable as a solution with justification.
Present an action plan for the recommendations. Recommendations in a case study report
should be fairly detailed.
Conclusions (maximum 1/2 page) [5 marks]
Every report should include a concluding statement/s on the subject of the report. Restate the aim
of the report and state how you have achieved it. Present the main findings and key
recommendations in a summarized. You should also restate the limitations of the report.

References [5 marks]
This is a list of all the sources of information you have referred to in the report (Harvard
References Format); minimum 5 references.
6.
Appendix
Any additional figures, tables, and photos if required

Plagiarism
A. First offence of plagiarism
a. If a student is caught first time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of
study in any assignment other than project work, the student will be allowed to resubmit the assignment once, within a maximum period of one week. However, a
penalty of deduction of 25% of the marks obtained for the resubmitted work will
be imposed.
b. Period of re-submission: The student will have to re-submit the work one week
from the date he or she is advised to re-submit.
c. If the re-submitted work is also detected to be plagiarized, then the work will be
awarded a zero.
d. Re-submission of the work beyond the maximum period of one week will not be
accepted and the work will be awarded a zero.
e. If the student fails the module and has a proven case of academic integrity
violation in this module , the student is required to reregister the module
f. If plagiarism is detected in Project work (Project 1, Project Planning and Project
Design and Implementation) the above clauses (a,b,c,d) do not apply and the
work will be summarily rejected. In these cases the student will be awarded a fail
(F) grade and is required to re-register the module
B. Second offence of plagiarism
a. If any student is caught second time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course
of study (in a subsequent semester), the student will directly be awarded zero for
the work in which plagiarism is detected. In such cases, the student will not be
allowed to re-submit the work.
b. If the student fails the module and has a proven case of academic integrity
violation in this module, the student is required to re-register the module

If any student is caught for the third time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course
of study (in a subsequent semester), the student will be penalized with a fail in the
module and shall be required to re-register the module.
D. Fourth Offence of plagiarism
If any student is caught for the fourth time in an act of plagiarism during his/her
course of study (in a subsequent semester), he shall be suspended from the College
for a period of one semester.
E. Fifth offence of plagiarism
If any student is caught for the fifth time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course
of study (in a subsequent semester), he shall be expelled from the College
Malpractice (MP)
A. First offence of MP
If a student is caught in an act of malpractice for an assessment component irrespective of
coursework or end semester, the student shall fail the module and shall be required to re-register
the module.
B. Second Offence of MP
If a student is caught a second time in an act of malpractice for an assessment component
irrespective of coursework or end semester (in a subsequent semester), the student shall be
suspended for one semester from the College.
C. Third Offence of MP
If a student is caught a third time in an act of malpractice for an assessment component
irrespective of coursework or end semester (in a subsequent semester), the student shall be
expelled from the College.
Other cases
It denotes all other forms of academic misconduct including but not limited to ghostwriting,
collusion, fabrication, falsification, unauthorized access to unseen examination papers and other
academic and administrative documents/systems and aiding academic dishonesty/misconduct
If a student commits an act of academic integrity violation whether defined as above as “other
cases” or of a different nature, those cases shall also be forwarded to a departmental level
committee set for the purpose .The committee shall investigate the case by means of a viva
and/or a disciplinary hearing and shall take appropriate decision.
Attendance Policy
Regular class attendance is expected of all students. If a student arrives late for class and the roll
call has been taken, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor at the end of that
class that he/she arrived late and was not absent. Any student who arrives late to class after 10
minutes from the start time of the session will be marked absent for that session. However, the

student shall be permitted to attend the session if he/she wishes to do so. Students should
regularly check their college email and SIS for any notifications on their attendance. Students
who do not fulfil the attendance requirement will not be allowed to write the End Semester
Examination and will subsequently be declared as failed. For more details refer to the student
handbook.
Late Submission Policy
The recommended practice at MEC is to set the cutoff time to 23:59 on the due date for all
assessment submissions. As per the Assessment Policy at MEC, for any late submissions, a
penalty of deduction of 5% of the marks obtained for the resubmitted work will be imposed for
each working day following the last date of submission till the date of actual submission.
Assessment documents submitted beyond a period of one week after the last date of submission
will not be accepted and will be awarded a zero for that assessment. In cases where the
submission has been delayed due to extenuating circumstances, the student may be permitted to
submit the work without imposing the late submission policy stated above. The extended period
of submission will be one week from the original last date of submission. In such cases, the
student is expected to submit the supporting certificates on or before the original last date of
submission of the assessment and the decision of extension rests with faculty responsible for the
assessment .The late submission policy shall be applied if the student fails to submit the work
within one week of the original last date of submission.
Students may contact their teachers for clarification on specific details of the submission time if
required.
