Hand-In 2 using SPSS
You will be using the data in the file INDIVIDUALS.TXT (first 200 cases) that you used for
the last SPSS homework. I will ask you to label graphs 2.1, 2.2, . . .. Each of these must be
cut-and-paste into an MS word document and the title should contain your initials.
1. Open the SPSS worksheet from last time (it will have a .sav extension):
[Menu Bar]/File/Open/Data/
2. (5 pts) View the relationship between Gender and Education
[Menu Bar]/Graphs/Legacy Dialogs/Bar/
Click Stacked icon
Select Summaries for Groups of Cases
Click Define button
(new dialog window)
Select N of Cases
Category Axis: EDUC
Stacks Defined by: SEX
Click Titles
Chart Title: 2.1 Distn of Gender w/in Education Level
Click Continue
Click OK
In the IBM SPSS Statistics Viewer Double Click the graph to open the Chart Editor,
then [Menu Bar]/Options/Scale to 100%
3. (5 pts) Repeat the previous step except for interchanging the role of Education and
Gender and use the title 2.2 myTITLE where myTITLE is a description of the resulting
graph – Don’t type in the seven letters myTITLE.
4. (2 pts) Graphs 2.1 and 2.2 both look at the relationship between Education and Gender.
How do they differ? (Your titles should explain the difference.)
5. (5 pts) Get the tables that graphs 2.1 and 2.2 visualize. Copy the table you create into
your word document.
[Menu Bar]/Analyze/Descriptive Statistics/Crosstabs/
Move Education to Rows
Move Gender to Columns
1
Click Cells (gives a new window)
Check Observed Counts
Check Row Percentages
Check Column Percentages
Check Total Percentages
Click Continue (back to crosstabs window)
Click OK
6. (2 pts) Use the output from Crosstabs to answer the following questions:
(a) What percentage of those with only a HS diploma and no college are female?
(b) What percentage of females have a HS diploma but no additional education?
Make sure the tables and your answers report the percentages to the nearest 10th of a
percent.
7. (5 pts) Visualize the relationship between Gender and Income:
[Menu Bar]/Graphs/Legacy Dialogs/Boxplot/
Click Simple Icon
Select Summaries for groups of cases
Click Define
Variable: EARN
Category Axis: SEX
Click OK
In the IBM SPSS Statistics Viewer Double Click the graph to open the Chart Editor,
then [Menu Bar]/Options/Titles
Click Close (on the popup window)
Click the word title in the Chart Editor
Type 2.3 Income w/in Gender Categories (pwv)
NOTE: When you copy-and-paste into a word document, you may find that the median
line of the boxplot disappears. This is unfortunate, but don’t worry about it. Using
‘copy objects’ usually works better than simply ‘copy’.
8. Get the numerical summaries for the boxplots produced above:
[Menu Bar]/Analyze/Descriptive Statistics/Explore/
Dependent List: Total Income
2
Factor List: Gender
Click Statistics Select Descriptives
Click Continue Select Display Both
Click OK
NOTE 1: You will be given many numerical summaries and the confidence interval
which is part of inference. Confidence intervals will come later. Be sure you can find
measures of center and spread for the two groups.
NOTE 2: The plot looks like the one you made before; but notice that there are some
differences.
9. (6 pts) Using the numerical output together with the side-by-side boxplots describe the
income distribution for males; for females; how do they compare.
