Final Project Outline (summary with topic outline due for approval)
The final project focuses on how your views on what is deemed “appropriate” may have been
impacted by the readings and discussions throughout the course. You do not need to claim that your
mind has totally changed, but you should show a careful and meaningful examination of the course
materials.
To do this, you must first discuss how our era’s views on morality and children impact your view on
what is appropriate. Then, you should explore the primary readings from this course but also use the
discussion forums to recognize how your views on what is appropriate are not “natural,” but rather
formed by our culture and historical era.
Instructions
1. Write an introduction describing your current views on morality.
2. Upon preliminary research, provide a brief analysis that discusses how other eras would view
the determination of what is appropriate and summarize how other cultures might view what is
appropriate for children. (You will need to support your claims and observations with direct
quotes from both the readings and from outside sources.)
3. Create an outline indicating the observations and claims you want to support when writing this
paper. You must provide at least five outside sources to use as evidence. Be sure to include
specific points that have surprised you with the readings thus far. This outline will serve as a
clear plan, identifying the topics you will cover in the final project. Consider developing a
strong argument in reference to crucial elements such as symbolism, morality, violence, fate,
and justice found in children’s literature.
Submit the 1 to 2 page summary with topic outline to the mentor for grading.
LIB-312: FROM HANSEL AND GRETEL TO THE HUNGER GAMES: AN EVOLUTION OF
CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE
Final Project
The final project requires you to consider how the readings in this course have impacted your views on
what is appropriate for young readers; it also involves examining how the readings have impacted your
understanding of how “what is appropriate” gets decided.
The final project must be 8-10 pages in length and include a minimum of five outside sources.
Instructions
1. Imagine that you are the parent of a middle-school child who has been selected to contribute to a
report that decides what your child’s class will be reading. (This distinct role will serve as a
baseline for your observations and point of reference for this project.)
2. Using the preliminary research and work submitted in Module 2, write a research paper that
focuses on what is meaningful, appropriate and/or disturbing to middle-school aged children. This
paper should result in useful data that can ultimately be presented to the school board. Be sure to
indicate how you might have responded to this question prior to taking this course and how you
answer it now.
3. Refer back to specific lessons, readings, discussions, and assignments that have impacted your
understanding of the debate over what children can or should read. As stated in the guidelines in
Module 2, this paper should demonstrate an awareness of how our era’s views impact what is or
is not deemed “appropriate.”
4. Analyze and evaluate crucial elements such as symbolism, morality, violence, fate, and justice
found in children’s literature that you have created a strong argument for. Support your claims
and observations with direct quotes from the readings and at least five outside sources to
substantiate your position.
5. Present your case to the school’s Board of Education, detailing your observations and findings.
Be sure to articulate a set of rules for “what is appropriate” that is logical for our current climate
but also recognizes the limits of it.
