Online in the 08 Weekly Blog and F2F sections on Tuesday, 10-10-17, in class.
2 ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
(2 Essay Assignment folder is in UNIT 2.)
Write an observation plus research-based analytical essay on one 2D artwork seen
recently at an art museum.
An ART MUSEUM field trip is required for this assignment. The Dallas Museum of Art is
close-by, and I provide a guided trip there for this assignment. You may also go on your
own to a nearby art museum.
The artwork chosen from the museum must be 2D – a drawing or a painting or a print or
a photograph. You may choose from any time period or country or style so long as
there is sufficient research available to complete the modes of analysis required.
The essay is a combined analysis including Formal Analysis, Biography, Stylistic,
and Artistic context modes of analysis applied to one 2D artwork seen in person.
Both observations of one artwork, and research about the artist and that artwork are required to
complete the various analyses. This essay should present an analysis of the visual object along
with an explanation of the contexts for the artist and for the making of the artwork. This essay is
not a biography of the artist, and not your interpretation of the artwork.
P 1 through 4 are observation based response and formal analysis.
P 5, 6, & 7 (rubric) should focus on a 5 year time period. The 5-year time period ends
with the date the artwork was made. Example: Artwork made in 1895, then 5-year time
period is 1890 – 1895. Stay focused!
2 in-text cited quotations or paraphrases required within P 5, 6, and/or 7.
In-text citations must be in MLA format. MLA7 or MLA8 are acceptable.
P 8 is the Conclusion.
A selfie taken with the artwork analyzed should be included after the end of the
essay. I should see both you and the artwork in the photo. See outline for caption.
Bibliography (aka List of Sources) of 3 or more sources is required. MLA Format
Full MLA formatted citations and MLA formatted list are required in the Bibliography.
3 or more different sources – only one encyclopedia. May use any good sources ranging
from journals to magazine article, to a wide variety of Internet available sources.
Everything used for information must be cited, not just quoted or paraphrased source.
An Outline, based on the Grading Rubric, is in this assignment document.
The outline rubric indicates the required and graded information needed to successfully
complete this assignment. I also provide a separate Writing Guide that gives you more
explanation about what information goes in each paragraph.

See artworks in person:
Go on an art museum field trip (group or personal) to see a variety of 2D Artworks.
Remember for the essay you must choose a drawing, or painting, or print, or an art
photograph.
Collecting your choices:
PHOTOGRAPH 3 to 5 artworks you like, including a photo of the label too (your choice).
“Selfie” – Remember I want to see YOU in the picture too.
Should choose artworks you like and are willing to research.
Save your pictures. Your selfie with Image of the artwork is inserted in the essay.
Student chooses one (1) of these artworks as the subject of their essay.
You should like the artwork enough to be willing to spend considerable time researching and
writing about that artwork. Do not pick something you do not like.
Research MUST be available for that artwork.
If you find there is not enough research to complete ALL parts of the essay,
immediately change artwork to another one of your choices.
