Jeffrey Reiman, who is considered a liberal political philosopher, asserts that
abortion is permissible.� His arguments begin with his position on the valuation
of life. Reiman explains that for those who value the continuation of lives, it
would be morally wrong to kill an innocent child or adult.� He clarifies his
position with respect to abortion, that it is not immoral to end a life of what
is defined as a human zygote, embryo, fetus or even infant as a non-person
because they have not reached that stage of self-awareness where the valuation
of life cannot be justified. Reiman reports that whether you begin with the
human zygote or after birth, he reports that they do not have a moral status of
equality and right to life until sometime after birth. It is this belief that
supports his stand that abortions are not immoral
On the other end of the spectrum is Don Marquis.� Marquis is a conservative prolifer who asserts that killing another human being is wrong because it deprives
them of their future of value.� It is Marquis future of value belief that
questions the validity of Reiman. Marquis argues that someone can be mistaken
about what they will value in their future and we can learn to value new
things.� He indicates that intentional premature death is morally wrong because
it deprives a fetus of a future like ours. (Marquis, 2002)
Jeffrey Reiman, despite his advocacy that infants have no rights, is not in
favor of killing young children and in this respect only speaks that they have
no moral rights and would not advocate for us to follow his train of thought on
the valuation of one�s life.� However, he points out that no matter if one is
debating about abortion or anything else of moral matter, we are heavily
influenced by our emotions, affections and fears, which may distort peoples.�
Therefore, it is important that we resist these distortions and create
independently sensible concepts for why actions are right or wrong.

Another tough assignment and question. Jeffrey Reiman believes abortion is
ethically permissible on the grounds that killing any offspring in only wrong
once is starts to care about life, which is after the first year. He believes
that since humans cannot account for asymmetric value that we only care about
our subjective selves. He believes that fetuses are not conscious or alive and
do not possess the property that gives us that asymmetric value and are not
entitled to special protection. Don Marquis does not believe abortion is ethical
but on the grounds of his future of value theory, which is a theory that all
life and everyone will have lives of value and includes all wrongness of
killing. Marquis makes his arguments by basically explaining what is wrong with
other anti abortion theories or perspectives like innocent human life
perspective or the pro attitude perspective while Reiman tried to argue on how
respecting and killing a fetus is right. They obviously sit on opposite sides in
this debate but for different reasons then one would think. I unfortunately
think both theorists are wrong on this topic and have flawed views. I don’t
think either affect any consequences when it comes to the debate of abortion.
For Reiman to even somehow ethically suggest that is okay to kill someone that
is less than a year old, is insane.�
