would prepare a presentation on Correctional Suicide and Mental
Illness. The audience could consist of correctional officers, medical
staff, counselors, prison warden, and other prison officials. The
resources I would use to conduct this research would be websites like
the National Institute of Mental Health (Suicide Prevention Resource
Center), U.S. Suicide Prevention Fact Sheet (Bureau of Justice
Statistics), and utilize the American Psychological Association.
I
would definitely have a power point presentation, I would add some
graphs and charts for the statistics showing a possible 5-10 year rate
of suicide that occurs in prisons. I would provide handouts such as
factsheets, copy of the power point, a resource page with websites,
referrals, and helplines numbers. When you are conducting a
presentation that includes a lot of details and facts you want to
provide as many handouts as possible. You want your audience to be able
to pay attention from your presentation and not have to waste time
taking tons of notes. Give them handouts on what you cover during the
presentation and review the handouts and reflect back to those, so your
audience realizes they have that information in front of them.
I
would also use some journals that were case studies reflecting this
topic they might even be around other prisons in our country or other
countries
I
would also have a guest speaker for this type of presentation someone
from the medical/psychological field to give some insight on preventive
measures and the protocols that should take place within the prison if
you think an inmate is showing suicidal threat.
I
have previously presented on this topic but pertaining to youth suicide
prevention awareness many years ago and I used similar sites, journals,
I also found a 10 minute youtube video that I felt was appropriate for
the audience I had at the time.
This
topic is very relevant and important to make it effective you must
conduct the proper research. There are a lot of different areas of
discussion you need to really prepare your research for this topic and
speak directly on the type of people you are trying to educate your
audience on and the type of treatment along with resources that are
available.
