Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological condition… Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological condition resulting in impaired social interaction and difficulty understanding verbal and nonverbal communication. According to the CDC (2020), 1 in 42 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by age 8. There is no cure for autism, but early detection and care can help a child reach their maximum potential. Providing care for a child diagnosed with ASD and helping mothers cope with the difficulties of parenting a child with autism are two significant nursing practice concerns regarding children with ASD. This EBP project seeks to assess how using mindful-based stress reduction (MBSR) to manage stress levels of mothers of children (2-10 years) with ASD compared to using nutrition or supplements for stress management to improve their mental stability within six months. The project is based on the PICOT question: “In mothers of children with ASD aged 2-10 years (P), how does using mindful-based stress reduction (MBSR) to manage stress levels (I) compared to the use of nutrition or supplements (C) improve their mental stability (O) within six months (T)?” TThe selected model for change for this project is the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM). The TTM is a model of health behavior change that posits that individuals progress through a series of stages in order to adopt a new health behavior. The stages of change in the TTM are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. In the precontemplation stage, individuals are not considering changing their behavior. In the contemplation stage, individuals are considering changing their behavior, but are not yet ready to take action. In the preparation stage, individuals are preparing to take action to change their behavior. In the action stage, individuals are actively changing their behavior. In the maintenance stage, individuals are working to maintain their new behavior. The TTM is relevant to this project because it can be used to guide mothers of children with ASD through the process of adopting MBSR to manage their stress levels.
