Evidence-based practice: Improving patient care
Description of agency and position
Safe & Fast Medical Services is a healthcare provider in Bangladesh. The facility
currently operates in major cities and towns in Bangladesh to help in the fight against pneumonia
which continues to claim lives of many children under the age of five (Mulholland, 2003). The
facility currently has a hundred and twenty employees working as nurses, physicians, cleaners,
drivers, pharmacists, cooks and other support stuff. Recently, the facility created an IT office
which I was appointed to manage. The position includes managing the facility’s information
technology infrastructure including computers, health management records, networks and other
communication utilities.
Project Abstract
Evidence-based practice (EBP) refers to the effective integration of best scientific
practices and evidence, clinical experience and patient preferences and values when caring for
patient. It is the latest and scientifically proven best practice in healthcare provision because it
integrates science, experience and patient interests to deliver a wholesome care (Houser &
Oman, 2011). Safe & Fast Medical Services in Bangladesh is seeking a grant to assist in the
preparation of IT infrastructure to facilitate effective implementation of EBP. The objective is to
have a fully implemented EBP at the facility for improved and up-to-date care within the year.
EBP is based on modern tested and proven best practices in healthcare and if implemented it will
promote healthcare at the facility. Safe & Fast Medical Services is requesting for funding
amounting to $65,500 for the acquisition of IT infrastructure and training of staff on EBP.
Statement of need

Safe & Fast Medical Services has 20 nurses who work around the clock on a daily basis
to attend to over 80 cases of pneumonia and other diseases across Bangladesh. Safe & Fast
Medical Services operates seven facilities distributed across Bangladesh with only two
computers per facility. Internet connection is poor at best and non-existence at worst. Most
nurses at the facility have been practicing for over twenty years and lack knowledge of current
nursing practices. The pneumonia situation on the ground could be well addressed with the
integration and implementation of EBP. The problem is that there are no enough infrastructures
to aid the implementation of EBP. If the facility is funded it will be able to acquire the necessary
technology and train the nurses on EBP and therefore be able to implement EBP.
Description of the program
Evidence-based practice will enable nurses learn from and use scientific evidence in
patient care. They will be able to learn and appreciate the values and preferences of patients.
Hence, they will be able to combine scientific evidence, their own clinical experience and patient
preferences to deliver a wholesome care to patients. The program is intended to help the facility
install IT infrastructure that will enable nurses learn about EBP from online libraries and share
their experiences with their colleagues from across the globe and learn new best approaches.
Also, nurses will have to be trained and mentored by their colleagues who have tried EBP and
have adequate experience with it.
Goals and objectives
Evidence-based practice: Improving patient care program has the objective of introducing
and ensuring effective implementation of EBP to the current operations of the facility. One of the
goals is to ensure that many as may children as possible are saved from the pneumonia pandemic

by use of an integrated healthcare system. Another goal is to ensure that the current nurses are
equipped with modern practices so that their potential is maximized. Safe & Fast Medical
Services has an objective of ensuring it becomes a leading healthcare provider in Bangladesh in
terms of applying EBP by the end of the year. More specifically, the objective is to ensure that
the organizational and individual barriers to effective implementation of EBP are removed or
reduced. Organizational barriers currently identified include lack of adequate computers and an
internet connection. The program aims at acquiring more computers for the facility and
connecting all its branches to an internet connection through which nurses can be able to
communicate and share knowledge. Individual barriers to implementation of EBP include lack of
knowledge awareness on the part of nurses on the application and importance of EBP (Majid et.
at., 2011). The program hence aims at creating awareness of existence of EBP in all the nurses
and also train them on how apply it. Training will be done using experienced nurses and also by
availing online libraries for nurses to learn by themselves.
