Examining Reality TV
Over the last few years, reality TV shows have increasingly become popular around the
world. There are several categories of reality TV shows which showcases love and hip hop,
survivorships, among others. From a personal perspective, I have developed a special interest
which has seen become a great fan of reality TV shows. Reality TV shows have had great
positive impacts on my life over the years. Apart from being a source of entertainment, reality
TV shows have been a source of inspiration for changes in life, as well as being a good distractor
from different vices which affect the youths today.
As years pass on, the popularity of reality television shows has increased tremendously.
More people have grown to love and cherish reality television than previously imagined. One of
the main reasons why reality televisions shows have gained such popularity is because they
happen to be a great source of entertainment. Unlike other shows which happen to be acted,
recorded, and thoroughly edited, reality TV programs are usually real, in that they lack all the
changes which are seen in recorded shows. According to Umstead (2017), most lovers of reality
T.V shows argue that these shows are not only entertaining but also shows how different
individuals react to different life situations. Many also find the shows quite intriguing due to the
unpredictability of the plot since most actors in a reality show react differently to different life
situations. Personally, I do find reality television shows to be more entertaining and captivating
compared to scripted shows due to the unpredictability of events in such. Apart from being
entertaining, reality televisions have been an important inspiration in my life.
According to Crow (2016), the popularity of reality televisions is not just because these
shows tend to be entertaining, but they tend to offer something more than just entertainment.
Crow (2016) and Marine (2017) concur in arguing that reality depict or showcase people who

inspire and motivate the majority of the viewers. In most reality shows, participants undergo
some challenges, and one can easily capture how there react to different life situations. Apart
from showing extreme conditions which survivors can survive with much struggle, reality shows
also tend to showcase different people competing with each other to win different prices by
outdoing one another. According to Marine (2017), The Biggest Loser is one of the best
motivational reality shows ever to grace televisions. She argues that by competing with each
other to see who loses the most weight to win a prize, the show also motivates millions of people
struggling with weight-related issues to begin losing weight. In watching reality shows on
television, I have found out that viewers tend to identify with participants, and most of them tend
to get influenced by what is shown in these shows. While some reality shows have been heavily
criticized for their artificial and scripted documentation, I have found a majority of them quite
inspiring to the common viewer which has seen most becoming inspired after watching week
after week of people going through many hurdles in their life. Through watching these shows, I
have found the motivation to accomplish different tasks, especially when faced with some
challenges.
With reality television shows being based on real-life experiences and individuals known
to many people, they have helped foster positive behavior among the youths. By showcasing
talent, real-life struggles, and handwork, reality television shows have been a good source of
distraction especially to youths who would otherwise get themselves involved in different vices.
These shows have also helped youths get distracted from troubles and crimes by keeping them
glued to the screen (Marine, 2017). By showing inspirational stories and struggles which most
admired celebrities have had to undergo, reality televisions have helped foster positive behavior
among the youths in general (Tsay-Vogel & Krakowiak, 2016). From a personal point of view,

reality television shows have helped me escape from different troubles and have often kept me
busy which has prevented me from engaging in the unwanted behavior. Through these shows, I
have also learned the importance of hard work, persistence, and self-worth.
Reality television shows have been a great source of joy not only to me but a majority of
viewers out there. This has seen the popularity of these shows increase tremendously over the
years. I believe that reality television shows have positively revolutionized television
entertainment and ought to be encouraged. Apart from providing entertainment to millions of
viewers across the globe, they have helped foster positive behavior in youths as well as being a
source of inspiration to many viewers.
