for one of the groups. No more than two groups can be in each category. Your choices are as
follows:

The due date for your paper and presentation will depend on when we cover the material in class. Your
written literature reviews are due by 8:30 a.m. on the date you will be scheduled to present.
Written Assignment – Literature Review
Literature Review – Each group will choose a theory (that I will approve) and research primary and
secondary sources on the theory. You will then write a literature review of your research. You will need
to include at least 8-10 sources on your theory. You should properly cite your sources in APA format in
the text of your paper and on a reference page.
To facilitate your group’s work and help you write the paper, I recommend you begin by writing an
annotated bibliography. That is, each person obtains, reads, and summarizes (in about one double
spaced page) at least two sources. Make sure at least one is a primary source, i.e., is by the first person
who wrote about the theory (see the discussion and citations in your textbook to help with this). This
should be your most cited (and your textbook should be your least cited) source.
A literature review is one step beyond an annotated bibliography. You should take your annotated
bibliography and construct an argument about the theory. This argument should:
2
1. provide a historical context for the theory, i.e., where did it start? How did it start? What was it
used to explain?
2. Explanation and definition of major concepts.
3. trace the development of the theory, i.e., what has it become? How has it evolved? What is it now
used to explain?
4. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of these various stages and applications of the theory, i.e.,
how has it been effective? How is it not effective?
5. Explain what the relevance of this theory is today, i.e., what relevance does it have for
communication today that either has not been researched yet, but should be? This argument
makes up your literature review.
So, take what you have learned about your theory from all the research your group has done and, as a
group, talk through each section. The way to write a literature review is to write the section and then
integrate quotes and citations and quotes where needed to attribute credit and/or bolster what you have to
say about each section. See the sample literature review posted under Files on Canvas to see how it
might read.
Part II – Teach the Theory & Lead Class Discussion
Application to a Communication Problem – Now that you know what kinds of processes, issues, and/or
problems this theory has been used to help us understand communication better and have some idea of
how it might be used today, apply it. For this part of the assignment, your group will need to:
a) identify a communication process, issue, and/or problem that needs investigation;
b) research what is going on with this issue today. For example, if you are interested in how
communication occurs between members of longterm romantic relationships, you would research
the topic.
c) Your group will explain how your theory (and method) could be used to investigate the
process, issue, or problem. This part of the assignment does not have to be written up in a formal
paper. Rather, this will make up the crux of your class presentation.
Discussion Leaders – At this point in the semester, you will have seen me lead class discussions during
which we discussed a theory, its context, and application to contemporary problems. Now it is your
group’s turn to lead that discussion. You will need to be prepared to present about 20 minutes on the day
you will lead discussion. Your presentation will consist of:
a) presenting a brief summary of the theory that includes the most important information from
your literature review and introducing the problem you believe the theory could be used to
explain;
b) explain briefly how you would use the theory to explain the problem;
c) present questions to the class that will facilitate a discussion of your issue and/or other related
processes or problems. DO NOT JUST PRESENT YOUR THEORY AND PROBLEM FOR 20
MINUTES. The discussion should be AT LEAST HALF of your presentation.
To help you get the class talking, keep the following in mind in preparing your questions:
3
1) ask define, explain, summarize questions first (such as What is x? How would you define it?
Explain how x theory works.);
2) follow up with synthesis, and apply questions (such as how does this theory compare to
another one from the chapter? How does this theory explain x communication?); and,
3) evaluate questions (such as how well does this theory explain this issue? What are the
limitations/advantages of the theory?)
Peer Evaluation
After your paper has been turned in and your group has led class discussion, each of your
will be expected to individually file your 400-500 word final evaluations of your group
members. This part of the process allows you to let me know how your group did. You will
evaluate each of your peers contribution to the team’s project as either above average (3),
average (2), or below average (1). This evaluation must be based on objective factors drawn
from and specifically linked to the Hirokawa reading and other research on small-group
communication we have read and discussed. Use citations and specific evidence. Keep your
subjective opinions out of it.
Your grade on this part of the Group Theory Project will be based on the quality of your analysis
of the group’s dynamic and functions. *If any member plans to or does single out another
group member for criticism, that critic must have talked with me about the problems at
least a week ahead of the scheduled presentation.
