Sample Informative Speech Outline
I.
INTRODUCTION
a. Attention Getter: Everyone knows a kid named Jonny. Jonny plays too many sports and
so he ends up having to go to the therapist to get rubbed out and get healthier. But Jonny is
okay with that because he gets to see the hot therapist so it’s no problem at all for him.
b. Background Info: So although this may seem funny it is something that actually takes
place in current society but is a situation that could disappear and Emma is the reason
why. Emma is the name of a new robot that has built within in the past year. Emma is actually
an acronym that stands for Expert Manipulative Massage Automation. This robot was created
to help provide actual physical therapy to real human patients.
c. Thesis: Psychology Today July 6th 2016 explains as technology only continues to
advance itself, we could find ourselves getting physical treatment from robots instead of humans
d. Significance: According to the Washington Post August 14th 2016, this new invention
of robots could start to pave a new road in the medical field that could drastically change how
we treat athletes.
e. Credibility: After a fair amount of research that I have conducted and being an athlete
myself, I believe that this is a fair assumption to make.
f. Preview Main Points: Today I will cover the history of this new robot, what the robot does
and how it works, and the future implications of the robot in the medical field.
Transition to Main Point 1: All great inventions need to start somewhere, so let’s look at where
Emma started
II. MAIN POINT 1: History
a. Preview Sub-points: The history of Emma involves going behind the scenes and looking
at who created her and where she first came to life
b. Sub-point 1: The man behind this brilliant invention is a Chinese man named Albert
Zhang. According to Nanyang Technological University, July 18, 2016, in the article,
“Robot Thearapist hits the spot with Athletes” Albert Zhang is from Singapore and is a
graduate from Nanyang Technological University or otherwise known as NTU. He graduated in
the double degree program with degrees in both Bio-Medical Sciences and Chinese
Medicine. Therefore we can sum up Mr.Zhang as being smarter than any of us will ever be. If
the degrees were not enough, he is also the CEO of a company known as AiTreat which
according to Aitreat.com, 2016, is a high-tech startup company that designs and integrates
assistive medical robots to assist doctors and physicians to provide medical care to patients,
which is where we find Emma.
Transition to Main Point 2: Therefore it is clear that Mr. Zhang has developed a very special
robot in Singapore and if everything goes as planned in clinical trials, Emma will hopefully be
making her way to other countries like the U.S. But enough of her past and present, let’s look
into the actually functions that make this robot so special
III. MAIN POINT 2: How it works
a. Preview Sub-points:. The two main components that make Emma special is her robot
arm that contains a 3D censoring camera and a 3D printed Massage Tip.
b. Sub-point 1: The first major component of Emma is her 3D censoring camera. What this
camera allows her to do is that the therapist can have her run a scan over your whole body and
the sensors that are located in the camera are able to pick of certain spots on your body where
you’re muscles are fatigued and tight even if you do not feel it. According to Ben Coxworth,
July 18, 2016, in the article, “Massage-giving Robots rubs people the right way” this
information then gets loaded to the magical cloud that contains everything now a days so that
the therapist and athlete can see where these spots are and they can setup a recovery plan.
c. Sub-point 2: The second thing that Emma contains is a 3D printed massage tip. This is
where all the magic happens. The 3D massage tip is set by the therapist to apply pressure and
to rub out those tight spots on your body. Once the therapist sets the location to apply
pressure, Emma does the rest. There are sensors that are located on the end of the tip that
allow Emma to measure the amount of stiffness or tightness in the location and can also
respond to stimulus that are produced by the body, which means she can ease up on the
pressure if the patient is experiencing pain according to the previous article by Ben
Coxworth. All of this information gets sent to the cloud as well and allows the therapist to tract
recovery more closely and accurately.
Transition to Main Point 3: Overall, with the capability of Emma to scan for stiffness and
tightness within the body and to then be able to help fix the body in those areas allows for a
promising future for Emma down the road.
IV. MAIN POINT :3 Future of Emma
a. Preview Sub-points: With Emma being such a new technological advancement in sports
medicine her future is not known but can be predicted both in the ordinary world and sporting
world.
b. Sub-point 1: According to apta.org, 2015, Physical therapy was first recognized as a
practice and an association of medicine in 1921 when Mary McMillan founded the American
Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association. Today with the creation of Emma, robots will be
able to help solve problems that have been around for years like the lack of trained therapist in
the field and the constant need to deliver consistent and good quality therapy. This will help
benefit everyday people all across the world and a start to pave a new road in the old practice
c. Sub-point 2: The second implication and future that Emma has is in the sporting
world. With our society putting so much emphasis on sports these days, it means that the
number of those who participate in them is going to increase dramatically which means that the
need for quick and quality therapy is going to increase as well. With the creation of these new
robots it will help athletes get back to performing their best much quicker than ever before and
will result in better performance.
Transition to Conclusion: Therefore, the future of Emma and robots that will be made like her
only seems to be one full of possibilities both in everyday life and in the sporting well as well.
V. CONCLUSION
a. Review Main Points: In this presentation I covered the history behind Emma the robot, I
described the process of how she works and treats patients, and I talked about the future
implications of Emma and other robots like her in the area of sports performance and therapy
b. Restate Thesis: As technology only continues to advance itself, we could find ourselves
getting physical treatment from robots instead of humans
c. Final Message: The future of sports performance could be one that does not lie in the
athletes or trainers hand, but in the hand of machines.
d. Return to Attention Getter: Jonny
