Review of “The foreign born in the American healthcare workforce: trends in this century’s first
decade” by Lowell (2013).
This case study describes the native and foreign born direct care workforce in US
healthcare in the first decade of the century. The case study provides a description of the
demographic and employment characteristics of healthcare occupations during the past decade.
This case study describes the native and foreign born workforce in US healthcare in the
first decade of the century. Immigrant women are more likely than native born citizens to be
employed in long term care where they are most condensed among professional practitioners and
lesser skilled direct care workers. The foreign born direct care workforce are similar to natives
in their average age, education, and the mainly by women workers.
The case study has included several tables of all of the major healthcare occupations, the
size of the workforce in 2001 and 2009, in addition to two measures of change in workforce
size. The numbers has showed that immigrants has been and remained under-represented in the
nursing occupation and the same remains for the therapists, technicians or other health support
therapists and assistants. The foreign born workers are over characterized only at the skills
extremes, either practitioners or as nursing or personal care aides.
The findings have indicated that the rate of growth of the foreign-born workforce has
been roughly twice that of the native workforce; however immigrants continue to be underrepresented in most healthcare occupations. Moreover, the proportional combination of foreignborn to the growth of the total workforce has been only about one-third that of the native born
citizens contribution. Immigrants continue to play a vital but not a central role in the healthcare
center.
Rondinelli (2017) notes that in quantitative designs, rigor is seen in the validity and
reliability of the results. First is credibility, a confidence in the truth of the data and
interpretation and credibility of researcher. Next step is conformability, being objective or the
neutrality of the data. Moreover, comparing data results with multiple investigators will increase
dependability.
The article I have cited is an example of a case study. Padgett (2012) remarks that case
study term refers to approach, method and product, and plays an important role in program
evaluation. Furthermore, case study draws on multiple perspectives and data sources to produce
contextually rich and meaningful interpretation. In academia, we use qualitative research to help
illustrate the application of clinical theories in individual cases (Padgett, 2012).
The authors have chosen this particular research method because they were investigating
the associations among various state level regulations, initial training quality and focus, and job
satisfaction in certified nursing assistants. For the purposes of comparison, case study is the best
method of the research.
Advantages of case studies include attending to real-life issues and scale and scope vary
extremely; they also allow collecting a lot of data. One of the disadvantages of the case study is
a challenge to draw a definite cause/effect.
