Pick one of these topics:
1. Discuss Pauls use of Abraham in Galatians or Romans. How does he interpret
Genesis
and what might be novel or unique about his interpretation? How does his
interpretation
reflect the audience and the needs of their community?
2. 2 Thessalonians is one of the disputed Pauline epistles. The major point of
evidence is his
view on the apocalypse (1 Thessalonians 4-5 and 2 Thessalonians 1-2). Do a close
reading
of the two and make an argument supporting or rejecting the authenticity of 2
Thessalonians. Can the differences between the two letters be accounted for or
do they
reveal two different authors?
3. Discuss Pauls arguments about the law and justification of Jews and Gentiles
in Galatians
and/or Romans. How does the occasion (e.g., audience, situation, problem) of the
letter
influence his arguments?
4. Weve discussed how ancient biographers present their subject in a static
format.
Namely, biographers are more interested in demonstrating that their subject is a
particular type of person than in demonstrating the psychological/social
development of
the subject. Choosing one of the gospels, how does the particular biographer
portray
Jesus? How does the biographer reflect that type in Jesuss teachings, events
in his life,
and/or interactions with the disciples and other communities?
5. What role does secrecy play in the Gospel According to Mark?
6. In the Gospel of Matthew, what is Jesuss relationship to the law? Determine
whether his
preaching is for or against the law, using specific examples from the text. Be
sure to
answer any potential counter-arguments. You could also focus on how Matthew
presents
Jesus as the new Moses, examining how this characterization of Jesus impacts his
teachings, events in his life, and/or his reception by various groups of people.
7. Choose either the nativity (Mt 1-2; Lk 1-2:40) or the Sermon on the
Mount/Plain (Mt 5-6;
Lk 6:17-49) and discuss how the scene fits with each gospels portrayal of
Jesus. What
themes occur in the scene and how does it continue in the rest of the gospel?
You may
choose to do a close reading of just one gospel and one scene (e.g., Matthews
nativity),
a comparison of the scene in two gospels (e.g., Matthew and Lukes nativity), or
two
scenes from one gospel (e.g., Matthews nativity and Sermon on the Mount).
8. What is the role of women (or presentation of women or importance of women)
in the
Gospel according to Luke, and how does it differ from other gospels and/or Paul?
9. Selecting one gospel, discuss the apocalyptic vision found in that text. What
is the
apocalyptic vision? What does Jesus expect to happen? Be as descriptive as
possible (i.e.
consider why, how, and when as well). How does the particular apocalyptic vision
relate
to Jesuss view of himself and/or the other themes of the gospel? Be sure to
also
consider how this apocalyptic vision connects to apocalypticism and messianism
of
second temple Judaism.
10. Pick any synoptic parallel from the triple tradition (i.e. something that
appears in all three
texts) and discuss how the unique elements of the passage in one gospel relate
to the
overall themes/orientation in that gospel.
