Aly, W. (2017, June 6). How not to talk about terrorism. New York Times. Retrieved from
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/06/opinion/terrorism-australia.html
This article is one from a popular source that talks about a terrorist incident that took
place in Manchester. Aly in this article captures the views of several leaders about the
incident. Some of the leaders think that terrorism is not necessarily related to the Islamic
religion or to Muslim Immigrants. There are also statistics that are cited stating that in fact
most terrorist activities are usually perpetrated by people who are non-Muslims. These
leaders are therefore of the view that the media gives more attention to terrorist attacks that
are perpetrated by Muslims but do not give those that are perpetrated by non-Muslims the
same attention.
They also state that fighting terrorism has nothing to do with Islam but is about
fighting evil. The other leaders, however, state that most terrorist attacks are usually done in
the name of the Islamic religion. The issue should, therefore, be taken seriously and Muslim
immigrants barred from entering the United States. This article is important to my research
because it gives a practical example of an attack that was done in the name of Islam and
therefore clearly portrays the use of Islam as a weapon by others. The article also points out
the various sentiments of leaders about the issue. The author of this article, Waleed Aly is a
political lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne, as well as a columnist and a
broadcaster. The New York Times is one of the leading national newspapers in the US.
Benson, S. R. (2016). Globalized Islamic holy terrorism: factors & motivations. Studies of the
Jihad War (4), 79-86.
This is a peer-reviewed article that talks about how and why some people use Islam as
a weapon. In the article, Benson states the genesis of the Islamic terrorist activity as a fight
for their rights when the Islamic countries had been colonized by the Europeans. The author
states that the state of the Muslim people in these colonized countries was pathetic as they
experienced a lot of social injustice, they were forced to accept both foreign domination and
culture. The Muslims in such country thus came together in a quest to fight for their
liberation. The attacks on all non-Muslim people began. The main points of the author are
that the Muslims at the time saw it as a personal duty to fight the war for their own freedom.
This war was against all nonmuslims, a practice that is mostly seen even today.
The Benson also explains the phenomenon of suicide killings as being based on the
faith that the Muslims had in their God. They believed that if they fought weaker people or
people of equal strength then it meant that they were using their own strength and did not rely
on God. These Muslims, therefore, sought to fight people of greater strength. This article is
important to my research because it addresses the issue of depth in my research. This is
because it doesn’t stop at noting that other people use Islam as a weapon but it goes further to
elaborate on the genesis of these activities and the beliefs behind suicide killings. The author
of this article Benson is a lecturer at Kings University and a renowned author of books about
the Islamic religion. The article contributes to existing information by giving comprehensive
information about why Islam is a weapon in the hands of other people.
Cherney, A., & Murphy, K. (2016). What does it mean to be a moderate Muslim in the war
on terror? Muslim interpretations and reactions. Critical Studies on Terrorism, 9(2),
159-181.
This is a peer-reviewed article that talks about the dilemma that the people who do not
use Islam as a weapon go through. Cherney states that there are moderate Muslims who do
not want their religion to be politicised and to be associated with violence. This means that
these may face violence and may be viewed as weak people who cannot strongly stand up for
their religion. The article states that due to the fact that such Muslims would be branded as
non-Muslims, they prefer to look away and focus on fighting things local wars as opposed to
being involved in Jihad wars taking place elsewhere.
The Cherney’s main point is that not all people use Islam as a weapon. There are
those who view their religion as a peace-loving one. These people, however, face challenges
in terms of being torn between shunning terrorist behaviors of their fellow Muslims and
guarding against being branded non-Muslim. The importance of this article to my research is
that it informs me about the people who do not use Islam as a weapon. It will enable my
research to be comprehensive by looking at both sides of the issue. The author of this article
is a lecturer at Stockholm University as well as a political analyst. This article contributes to
the body of knowledge by doing an in-depth analysis of what the people that do not consider
Islam a weapon go through.
Jackson, R. (2007). Constructing enemies:‘Islamic terrorism’in political and academic
discourse. Government and Opposition, 42(3), 394-426.
This is a peer-reviewed article on the subject of Islamic terrorism. It talks about the
fact that most Muslim terrorist leaders use their contact with the west in terms of the military
as well as politically to drive their terrorist activities. The aim of this Jackson is to elaborate
how leaders take advantage of the deeply ingrained religious beliefs of some Muslim people
and use this belief to make them think that terrorist activities are justified in the Muslim
religion. In this way, the Muslim terrorist uses the religion against others. The main points of
the author are that as much as most terrorist activities are perpetrated in the name of the Islam
Religion, we should also look at other possible causes of terrorist activities.
This is so that we do not end up being biased in dealing with terrorism but so that we
can have a comprehensive view of terrorism and its possible causes. Some of the other causes
of terrorism that the author cites are social, political and cultural factors. Jackson also notes
that not all people use Islam as a weapon. Some Muslim people are of the view that the
religion is a peaceful one and a tolerant one too. The importance of this article to my research
is that it informs me of the role of terrorist leaders in radicalizing and motivating the Muslim
terrorist and as such the use of Islam as a weapon. The author of this article, Jackson is a
political analyst and a lecturer at Kings University. It contributes to the existing information
by exploring how Muslim terrorist come into being via the radicalization process.
Shane, S. (2017, February 1). We Are At War With Radical Islam. New York Times.
Retrieved from https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/02/01/us/stephen-Bannonwar-with-radical-islam.html
This is an article from a popular source that talks about the fight against the Jihad war.
Shane states that Mr. Stephen Banon who is one of the strategists in the government has
expressly stated that the United States is in a war against the Jihad. Banon also states that the
Islamic States should stop targeting Christian Europeans in the name of Islam. In the article,
it is stated that the Islamic states are using sophisticated ways to fund their terrorist actions.
These ways are like using social media platforms to get funds for their activities. This article
is important to my research because it also proves the fact that some people use Islam as a
weapon and it also portrays the target as mostly non-Muslims. The author of this article, Scott
Shane is one of the writers in the New York Times. New York Times is the leading national
newspaper in the US. It contributes to the body of knowledge as it states the new
sophisticated ways which the perpetrators of terrorism are using to fund their activities.
Stengel, R. (2017, February 13). Why saying, “Radical Islamic Terrorism Isn’t Enough. New
York Times. Retrieved from https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/13/opinion/whysaying-radical-Islamic-terrorism-isn’t-enough.html
This is an article from a popular source that talks about Islamic extremism. Stengel’s
main point is that it is not enough to just say that an act was done due to Islamic extremism.
In short, the name used, whether it is violent terrorist activities or Islamic terrorism, does not
matter in fighting the terrorist activities perpetrated by people of this religion. The Stengel
states that what matters is the strategy that is used in fighting these activities. The importance
of this article to my research is that it proves that indeed there are people who actually use
Islam as a weapon and it has therefore elicited different reactions from leaders. Some of these
leaders state that they are just terrorist attacks perpetrated in the name of Islam as opposed to
Islamic extremism. The author of this article, Richard Stengel is a fellow at Harvard’s
Kennedy School. The New York Times is a national newspaper in the US. It adds to the body
of knowledge since it shows the different ways that could be used to combat terrorist
activities.
Venkatraman, A. (2007). Religious basis for Islamic terrorism: The Quran and its
interpretations. Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, 30(3), 229-248.
This is a peer-reviewed article that talks about the Jihad war as a way that other
people use Islam as a weapon. The article first of all states that the term Jihad is perceived
differently by different Muslims. There are those that perceive it a word that basically means
to strive, while there are those that believe it means holy war. Venkatraman notes that most
Muslim leaders that take part in terrorist activities use the word to advocate for radicalism as
they state that those people who take part in this war will inherit heaven. There are however
also those people who believe that participating in these acts will make the participants
inherit hell. The main point in the article is to do with the many questions that Muslim
religious leaders should answer in a quest to ensure that there is harmony within the religion.
Such questions are like the people who should participate in the Jihad wars, the weapons that
should be used in this war, whether it is a personal duty as well as who should be the targets.
The importance of this article to my research is that it talks about the use of the Jihad war as a
weapon in Islam and it also brings out the different perceptions of this word among people.
The author of this article, Venkatraman, is a professor of religious studies and an author of
various other books on religion. The article contributes to existing knowledge by pointing out
the discord that exists in the Islam religion and therefore the areas that should be addressed to
ensure harmony.
