The Food Stamp Program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP), provides financial assistance to supplement the diet of people living below the poverty line.
The electronic Food Stamps can only be used to purchase nutritious food. The program has a two
pronged objective: welfare and equity. (NSCL 2010).
The welfare objective refers to taking care of the basic needs of families who cannot take care
of themselves. Anyone who is struggling to make it financially is eligible for the SNAP program,
which means they receive an allotted amount of food stamps each month..
The Food Stamp program also aims to increase equity. Equity refers to a fair or equitable
distribution of wealth and opportunities in society. The Food Stamp program is funded by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture; hence it represents a transfer of resources from middle or higher income
taxpayers to poorer families. The result is a more equitqble distribution of Rsourus across the
population. (USDA 2014)
The Food Stamp program trades off
