What is a good response to this post? Intelligence gathering is a… What is a good response to this post? Intelligence gathering is a process cycle that most processes have or at least a visual depiction to help understand the steps to ensure it is completed correctly from beginning to the end. However, methods are not without faults, even as simple as they may be. First, this process has steps that may not all be completed by the same person, so herein lies the centralized issue: communication and collaboration. To make matters even worse, these analysts may not even work in the same building or location. Therefore, it is imperative that when one analyst finishes their portion and forwards it to the next person, they contact that person in some way, shape, or form to let them know the next step is in their hands. Successful communication helps keep all parties in the loop, including contacting the coordinating manager with updates to ensure projects get done promptly. Secondly, I feel that intelligence cycles become disturbed by the known and unknown targets considering the available assets and what becomes more of a priority (Gill, 2013). Before moving on, I found an interesting article, short but to the point. A law enforcement officer in Ireland received a telephone call anonymously alerting him that a man not named in the article would be shot on a specific date and time; the officer filed the proper reports, so the officer was in the collection stage. However, the underlying issue is the same officer never notified his superior of the call, nor did he contact their intelligence department to inform them a report had been filled and submitted to them. Due to this communication failure, it never received any more attention. The man mentioned was shot but did not sustain a life-threatening wound (Policeombudsman, 2011). Intelligence can be an excellent tool in predicting or setting the stage for tracking or understanding individuals. Knowing or having data on a subject, law enforcement officers can predict the individual’s moves and habits. This knowledge can further streamline and assist the officers in watching a person of vital interest if they have been made aware that said individual may be up to something illicit but can intelligence gathering and understanding of said information account for the emotion of that same individual? While we are creatures of habit, regardless of our profession, feeling still can take us as individuals to places we usually wouldn’t conceive that intelligence analysts cannot always account for (Matsumoto, Hwang & Frank, 2012). Take a second to think about your average day or workweek; what do you do to get ready in the morning, and in what order? What do you have for breakfast the majority of the time? Is it usually the same establishment if you grab something on the way to work? These routines can be observed and analyzed to understand people and map their lives. Now let’s take a second and impose some emotion into the mix; anger, sadness, jealousy, and so forth are potent agents of one decision-making ability and their lives, and no amount of information that can be gathered will account for it or help determine if that same individual will become violent (Matsumoto, Hwang & Frank, 2012). It’s often more than not that when an individual approaches you about a problem and has a solution and is renowned in his field by his peers, he would be considered an expert or has a level of experience under his belt per se. It is also much more comforting to take advice from someone of this stature, but is everything they say correct or best? Why most of us are experienced in our fields in some shape or form, we had to get there one way or another, and that usually involved us trying to become the best we could be in that particular field. We learned everything that pertained to us until we were comfortable then and moved on to the next challenge, but it started to slow down here. Once individuals become comfortable or reach a goal we set for ourselves, we become complacent, let our egos get in the way, or do not stay current on new requirements in an ever-evolving field. Why would we, when our peers believe we are the best (Arkes & Kajdasz, 2011). Law enforcement analysts must remember this when determining processes they have been asked to review. The answers they provide from gut instinct or from relying on their experience could result in consequences that could have been avoided (Hernandez, 2013).
